March 2012

Dear Homeowner,

After a warmer-than-normal winter, spring is breathing down our necks with record temperatures. Soon, green grass will be sprouting in New Jersey and New York lawns. Here are a few tips for growing a lush, beautiful lawn this spring, and for maintaining it through the summer months.

  • Start by giving your yard a visual inspection and a light overall raking. Take note of areas that might require extra attention. By treating early, you'll be well on your way to a full and healthy lawn.
  • Proper soil testing and fertilization are next on the lawn to-do list. Along with aerating, these steps facilitate water and fertilizer absorption and help eliminate risk of lawn pests. A properly timed application of pre-emergent herbicide will stop weeds before they germinate, and a slow-release fertilizer will provide food to newly awakened grass roots.
  • Once your grass starts growing, water it thoroughly and on a regular schedule. Watering more, on a less-frequent schedule, produces better results than watering daily. Schedule mowing so that only the top 1/3 of the grass length is removed. Then, throughout the growing season, try mowing in alternating directions for a fuller, thicker turf.
