Between intermittent freezes, snows and unpredictable thunderstorms, your property is preparing to burst forth in an array of exciting spring growth. It's a good time to take stock of your landscaping--and conduct a few, simple tasks to ensure that lurking shrubs, flowers and greenery emerge as healthy and vibrant as possible.

  1. Spring Pruning of Damaged Plants: It's not unusual for tree and shrub branches to be damaged during winter cold, snow and wind. To give injured branches a fresh start, prune them with a handsaw or hand pruners. Cut branches back to the live stems so air and sunlight can make their way to the tree or shrub center. Large trees should be pruned by a  professional horticulturist, since they require specialized equipment and trimming techniques.
  2. Mulch Plant Beds: Used to retain moisture, prevent soil compaction, moderate soil temperature and prevent weed growth, mulch should be installed in two- to three-inch minimum layers. If your soil is sandy, a thick layer of mulch helps with water retention. To prevent weeds from taking root in your foliage beds, rake up old mulch and remove existing weed growth. Apply new mulch after soil thaws, but before the warm season kicks in. Leave a couple of inches "un-mulched" around the base of your plants in order to prevent mold growth and encourage air and nutrient circulation.
  3. Take Soil Tests and Apply Fertilizer: For a nominal fee, the Green Meadows team will check your property's soil pH using a kit. We'll take several samples from different areas to ensure accuracy, and after analyzing the results, we will apply the appropriate soil treatment. Finally, our landscape experts will spread a high-quality, balanced fertilizer around trees, shrubs and new growth, as needed.
