Comments from the Chairman
November 11 is the Veteran's Day Parade in Leavenworth. This is the largest parade on this date, west of the Mississippi River and possibly in the entire USA. Dignitaries from all over Kansas and throughout the entire Midwest will be in attendance at this event. This cebration has its own uniqueness due to it's symbolic numbers (11-11-11.) You will have three choices on that day; you can stay home and ignore the celebration, you can come out and be a spectator and cheer on all the parade participants, or you can be a part of the parade by volunteering to be associated with an organization or a float, as a walking participant. The Republican Party of Leavenworth County will sponsor 4 entries in the Parade. - The Republican Party organization - The Republican women's organization - Parental Rights (walking group) - Kansans for Life (a Pro-Life organization) (walking group) Come out and join with us, you can ride the float or you can walk, either way you will have fun, meet new people and make many new friends. If you would like to join us in the parade, we will assemble at 9:30 am at 4th and Walnut Street (vicinity of the Courthouse).
As Americans we honor our veterans on this day. Thousands have paid the ultimate sacrifice that we may live in a land liberty and enjoy the freedoms we hold dear. |

November 4th - No More Income Tax Tour
By Representative Connie O'Brien.
As Americans, we have been extremely blessed. I believe that our founders were dvinely inspired when they gave us our constitution and a Republic form of government. A government where, "We The People" can make the corrections necessary to keep our country moving on the right path. A path that recognizes our God given inalienable right to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
I believe that in recent years America has strayed from that path but now, here in Kansas, we have renewed the effort to protect human life in all its stages. Liberties have been eroded but now we're positioned to secure those liberties. Poor fiscal policies have stymied the pursuit of happiness for many in our state and placed the future of our children and grandchildren in doubt, but now we are ready and positioned to adopt fiscal policies that will secure the pursuit of happiness for all Kansans.
Everyone should know by now that government spending is out of control. Taxes are often excessive and counter productive. Our National debt has gone through the roof. Many Kansas voters realized this and began to make the necessary adjustments with the elections of 2010. Those voters brought change to Washington and they made some dramatic changes in Kansas as well. We elected a new governor and now many new faces can be seen in the Kansas House. Representative Jana Goodman is one of those new faces and the people of the 41st District are fortunate to have her.
We've had elections before and we've seen new faces before, but in 2010 something else changed. The collective tax and spend mentality that dominated Kansas government in recent years has been replaced with one where legislators are now focused on controlling the size of government, lowering the tax burden, and most importantly, for the first time in years, we're focusing on private sector job creation. Our Kansas economy is way below the national average. Some of you may know that during this past decade, when our Kansas economy is compared with other states, we ranked 37th. In addition to that poor economic showing, last year Kansas was dead last in private sector job creation.
That's about to change ! We have a plan !
A plan to make Kansas, its citizens and small business owners, prosperous again. We often hear politicians use the phrase "Moving Kansas Forward". In recent years it seems that we have been taking one step forward and two steps back. Times are changing. I truly believe we are finally poised to turn the corner and move Kansas steadily forward. We have a governor and a majority of legislators in the Kansas House who understand that in order to move our state forward we must find ways to reduce the tax burden, let taxpayers keep more of their hard earned cash, and support policies that allow small businesses to flourish. Seventy five percent of all the jobs in Kansas are provided by small businesses. These are businesses that average 20 or less employees. These small businesses are the main Job creators in our state. When we look around at other states that have flourished during these tough economic times it's easy to see one particular aspect they have in common.
They are states that have attracted businesses and created jobs by controlling state spending and lowering taxes. More specifically these are states with NO STATE INCOME TAX.
Eliminating the income tax in Kansas will amount to an immediate pay raise for every family and has proven to be one of the best way to help job providers. I have always believed that the best way to restore prosperity in Kansas was through "Job Creation, Not Taxation".
When I first took office in 2008 I realized that Kansans were Taxed Enough Already. I made a promise to myself and my constituents that I would hold the line on spending and oppose any and all efforts to raise taxes. I have kept that promise. With the changes brought by the 2010 elections we are finally in a position to truly move Kansas forward. Today, I would like to invite you to stand with me, my fellow legislators, and our governor, as we call for the elimination of our Kansas Income Tax.
Thank You and God Bless! Connie |

"The elimination of the state's income tax gives wage earners an immediate pay raise and encourages economic growth in our state," she said. "With surrounding states like Missouri considering income tax elimination, it is critical that Kansas creates a better environment to do business before we lose out to neighboring states."
Kansas for No Income Tax is a non-profit organization with 220 public members and is seeking to grow its membership to 2000 by the end of the year. According to the group's website, Kansas has the 19th highest state and local tax burden in the country with an economic outlook that is ranked 37th in the nation.

The Supreme Court and the Future of Liberty
Mark Alexander - October 6, 2011
The most critical case since FDR
"There are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations." --James Madison
The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) has convened for its 2011/12 term, and one case before the court will determine whether the central government can nationalize another one-sixth of the American economy. Call it The American people v. ObamaCare.
For the record, that would be one-sixth of what remains of free enterprise after all the nationalization already undertaken by Barack Hussein Obama, ostensibly to "save the economy." If Obama and his socialist cadres continue to undermine free enterprise at the current pace, his goal of "fundamentally transforming the United States of America" into a socialist democracy will be assured, regardless of the victors in the next election cycle.
Indeed, the rapidly growing ranks of Americans already dependent upon government subsidies (approximately 32-35 percent), many of whom are content to vote for the redistribution of others' incomes rather than work for their own, greatly influences national elections. That dependent electorate, combined with the government's control over tens of millions of other American incomes by way of nationalization and regulation, increases the number of its dependents to about 40 percent, which poses a perilous threat to Liberty. Think about it this way: Forty percent of Americans are, to varying degrees, fiscally addicted to the public treasury. Is it any wonder that American Liberty is under siege, and that its future is in question?
Responding to a complaint by 26 states, the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the "individual mandate" in so-called "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act" (ObamaCare). The mandate itself is an unprecedented statist requirement that every American buy an insurance product or service and have proof of coverage. As such, it is a gateway measure for governmental authority to define not only the type of coverage but also the degree.
If SCOTUS fails to uphold the Circuit Court's ruling, ObamaCare will be well on its way to increasing the number of Americans whose incomes are directly regulated by the central government to well over 50 percent. The implications for "free and fair" elections are ominous, given that a majority of Americans would then have an economic interest in electing only those who promise to continue doling out the "free" goodies.
As you recall, when asked about the constitutionality of ObamaCare legislation prior to its shamefully rigged House and Senate passage, Democrat leadership simply scoffed and rebutted, "Nobody questions that." Despite the unmitigated arrogance of those on the Left, who treat our Constitution as a doormat, the Supreme Court will have to answer that question.
That answer will depend on whether the number of justices who abide by their oaths "to support and defend" the United States Constitution and Rule of Law as enshrined within it outnumber those justices who have utterly abandoned their oaths in favor of the rule of men under the so-called "living constitution." Put simply, the Supreme Court will be charged with upholding the supreme contract between "We, the People" and our government.
The Obama administration is trying to fast-track this critical decision. How is SCOTUS likely to rule? Here is the current High Court breakdown.
On the side of Rule of Law, those more inclined to adjudicate based upon what our Constitution actually prescribes and proscribes, are four justices, including Chief Justice John Roberts (age 56), appointed by George W. Bush in 2005; Justice Antonin Scalia (age 75), appointed by Ronald Reagan in 1986; Justice Clarence Thomas (age 63), appointed by George H.W. Bush in 1991; and Justice Samuel Alito (age 61), appointed by George W. Bush in 2006.
On the Left are Ruth Bader Ginsburg (age 78), appointed by Bill Clinton in 1993; Stephen Breyer (age 73), appointed by Clinton in 1994; Sonia Sotomayor (age 57), appointed by Barack Obama in 2009; and, Elena Kagan (age 51), appointed by Obama in 2010.
On the fence would be the ninth justice, Anthony McLeod Kennedy (age 75), a heretofore unreliable justice appointed by Ronald Reagan in 1988, in the wake of the Democrats' vicious and unprecedented assault on Reagan's original appointee, Robert Bork, one of our nation's pre-eminent jurists.
My prediction in the ObamaCare case is a 5-4 split, with Kennedy voting with the majority -- which majority, I cannot predict. As Leftists in both the legislative and executive branches have entirely abandoned their obligation to uphold our Constitution, fending off a substantial threat to Liberty now rests in the hands of one loyalty-confused Supreme Court justice.
If the Court upholds the 11th Circuit's decision, it will be the most significant strike against national legislation since rulings against Franklin Roosevelt's socialist regime in the 1930s.
Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi correctly concludes that affirming the 11th Circuit's decision would be a major step to "define the boundaries of Congress' power" and "defend Americans' rights and freedoms."
However, if the Supremes do not uphold the 11th Circuit's decision, batten down the hatches. Until which time ObamaCare can be fully repealed by congressional majorities which do abide by their oaths, House Republicans can and must use the authentic powers granted by our Constitution to de-fund ObamaCare and block enactment of any further provisions. Of course, that will require leadership...
In closing, may I remind you that the next president will have the opportunity to nominate one or more Supreme Court Justices? |
Putting Things in Perspective
What Does it Mean to be an American
Dennis Prager - Q & A at the University of Denver
An Anonymous Observation
"The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president." Words of Wisdom "A nation can survive its fools, even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves against those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not as a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the souls of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear." - - Roman statesman and political theorist Marcus Tullius Cicero
Why the Roman Empire Fell "The Roman Republic fell, not because of the ambition of Caesar or Augustus, but because it had already long ceased to be in any real sense a republic at all. When the sturdy Roman plebeian, who lived by his own labor, who voted without reward according to his own convictions, and who with his fellows formed in war the terrible Roman legion, had been changed into an idle creature who craved nothing in life save the gratification of a thirst for vapid excitement, who was fed by the state, and who directly or indirectly sold his vote to the highest bidder, then the end of the republic was at hand, and nothing could save it. The laws were the same as they had been, but the people behind the laws had changed, and so the laws counted for nothing." |
