Comments from the Chairman August is coming! Less than 30 days and several elections will be decided. Make a decision today that you are going to vote. Please take advantage of all the opportunities to vote early; either by Absentee Ballot, by Advance Voting (by mail or by in-person walk in at the courthouse). There are no good reasons not to vote. America is counting on you.
The Primary Election held on August 3rd will determine who the Kansas Insurance Commissioner will be. There is no Democrat opponent; therefore, August is the final selection for that race. It will also determine who the Republican nominee will be for our own Leavenworth County House Representative (District 41); who the Republican nominee will be for the KS Secretary of State, as well as the KS Attorney General and the KS Governor. Also final with the August Primary will be the election/re-election of all the Leavenworth County Precinct Committee members. It is imperative that we take maximum advantage of our opportunity in August to select conservative candidates who are dedicated to the principles espoused by our Party. RINO's (Republican in Name Only) have a place -- it's in the zoo, but not in Kansas politics.
In an attempt to enlighten and to inform voters, we will showcase our local candidates in this edition of our newsletter. Remember, voting starts July 14th.

Connie's Corner by: Rep. Connie O'Brien
 Why I'm Running for Re-election
Several of my friends and neighbors have been asking if I plan to run for re-election. My response is absolutely. I have filed and I am seeking re-election. I have appreciated the opportunity to represent the people of the 42nd District over these past two years and I would like to return to take care of some unfinished business.
When I was first elected to the Kansas House in November of 2008, I discovered that the campaign season isn't over in November. It continues for several of those who have been elected. Those seeking leadership positions: House Speaker, Speaker Pro-tem, Majority Leader, Caucus Chair, etc. That is when they begin campaigning. The voters in their campaign are the newly elected House members. I met and chatted with most everyone seeking these leadership positions. For me, this was an opportunity to get acquainted with some new people and to renew acquaintances with some very dear friends. Because I have been politically active for years, I knew several of those seeking leadership positions in the Kansas House. Representatives Peggy Mast and Virgil Peck are two of the representatives that I had come to know and admire. Meeting with Mike O'Neal and Melvin Neufeld, two representatives seeking the Speaker's position, was very interesting. When all was said and done, I believe House members elected some of the best leaders that the Kansas House had to offer. Electing good leadership is paramount in the effort to pass good legislation but, leadership is only part of the equation. If Kansas hopes to get its fiscal house in order we must support our conservative candidates and insure that they make it through the August Primary and the subsequent election in November. The outcome of these elections will ultimately determine whether we actually begin to move Kansas in a positive fiscal direction.
Our Kansas economy is very fragile and we will again face a short fall in the budget next year. Taxes and bond indebtedness are still issues. We must tighten our belts. The money from the federal government will disappear next year. We must reign in spending and repeal the one cent sales tax increase if we hope to get Kansas on the road to recovery.
The 2009 legislature laid the ground work for insuring that Kansans have affordable energy. Passage of the Comprehensive Energy Expansion Bill was a great achievement and I was proud to support that effort. Now we are waiting for final approval to get started. Developing our energy resources will help create jobs and provide abundant and affordable energy for Kansas citizens.
Immigration is a hot topic nationally and state wide. Our federal government has failed to address this problem adequately so states must take it upon themselves to stop rewarding people who enter our country or state illegally. When hiring employees, businesses must use e-verify.
I would like the honor of returning to Topeka to work on issues that are very important to the citizens of Kansas. I supported balancing the budget without tax increases. I supported the comprehensive expansion of affordable energy. I supported individual Second Amendment Rights. I opposed every attempt to raise taxes or to give benefits to illegal immigrants. I am pro-woman, pro-family and pro-life.
You can learn more about me and where I stand on other issues at www.connieobrien.net.
Remember to vote August 3, because we need good republicans in office. |
Candidate Bio
Sandra Bohne
Hi, I'm Sandra Bohne and I'm running for the Kansas House, District 40. I'd like to be your representative because we need a strong voice to represent the average families in our state. I can be that voice. Our government needs to serve us, not the other way around. We have become servants, and even slaves, of big government. The keystone of my campaign is "Strong Families, Strong Communities, Less Government." On every issue and every vote, I'll ask myself, "Is this good for the families of Leavenworth and Atchison Counties?" Hard work and sacrifice is what will make us strong. It's what our times demand. It's time to apply grandma's principle of "use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without" to government. I volunteer throughout the community. I'm active as a school, church, and scouting volunteer. I see young families struggling to provide basics for their children. I see older parents who want to hold on to what they've worked for and pass it on to their children. We don't need give away programs. We need to teach people to take care of themselves and not expect the government to take away all their problems. I will vote to: Shrink the size and scope of government Reduce government interference in business Involve communities in taking care of their own, reducing the burden of the state Defend human life from conception to natural death Allow states determine their own health care path Protect our 2nd Amendment rights We love Kansas. We came to Leavenworth during military service and have stayed because of the wonderful community we have here. We have lived here for 20 years, after spending 20 years in the Army. It's our home of choice. I ask for your vote. |
Candidate Bio
Jana Goodman
I am Jana Goodman. I am very successful business woman in Leavenworth, with a solid background in computer management, the medical services and education. I have worked in each of these areas over the past few years and currently teach part-time at the University of Kansas as well as manage our family business.
There is a lot of excitement about my candidacy. We have raised over $20,000 for our initial campaign war chest.
For the past two years, I have worked actively in the Republican Party and prepared to run for office in this campaign. I have been following legislative and local issues closely. I have a terrific campaign team in place, and have been working hard since January, when I announced my candidacy.
I am convinced that this election is like no other in our lifetime. This may well be our last chance to turn off the fire hose of socialism heading at us. Our liberty is hanging by a thread. It is not enough to just elect Republicans. Without strong leaders, we face more of the same from Topeka: higher taxes, higher spending, less individual opportunity. The Republicans we elect must be serious people who know what they are doing. They must clearly articulate our values to all voters and other legislators, so that the right ideas about government are supported. I am the right kind of Republican to elect: principled, logical and effective. I am running to protect freedom.

Candidate Bio
Owen Donohoe
Owen Donohoe, 65, has been married for 45 years. He has five children and nine grandchildren. He has been a resident of Kansas since 1989 when he moved here to start his small business, Donohoe & Associates, a medical device company. Owens' experience as a small business owner and parent of five children has helped him to develop leadership skills necessary to meet challenges head-on and find solutions. He understands that it is the citizens that make Kansas great. A thriving economy provides stability for families and communities. He is working hard to bring economic stability to our community. He does it by focusing on strengthening businesses which promotes job growth, providing tax relief, and making sure all children receive a quality education. Owens' experience in leadership provides families and businesses in the 39th District with the tools they need to prosper. Owen is a fiscal conservative, for limited government and a strong proponent of individual property. He worked diligently on legislation and budget appropriations in the Kansas House of Representatives. The Appropriations Committee devised a plan that curtailed government spending while maintaining critical services. He was committed to finding cost-saving measures instead of considering tax increases that would harm already-struggling individuals, families and businesses that provide our tax base. In the end, the liberal members of the House (both Democrats and Republicans) prevailed and forced the state's largest-ever tax increase. Excessive spending - not our revenue stream - put the state in this rut. State General Fund spending increased 48 percent from 2004 to 2008, while population growth during that same time averaged less than one-half of 1 percent per year. The Fiscal Year 2011 budget is nearly $500 million in the red. In the 2010 legislative session, Rep. Donohoe favored trimming expenses rather than raising taxes. Unfortunately, his vote was outnumbered by the Democrats and liberal Republicans who have not learned to live within our state's means. As Kansas faces a staggering debt of more than $4.5 billion, Rep. Donohoe is again championing the cause of responsible and disciplined budgeting, rights, and pro-life. Owen serves on the following committees: - Appropriations Committee - General Budgetary Committee - Economic Development & Tourism Committee - Aging and Long-Term Care Committee |

Putting Things in Perspective
"We the People" is the mantra of the people. The Party Platform is the voice of the Party in action. Politicians are instruments to be used to effect policy and change.
An Anonymous Observation "The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president."
