Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, or "nose job", is a specialized procedure designed to improve the appearance and function of your nose.  This procedure is performed to make the nose appear softer and less noticeable.

Dr. Sandel's philosophy:

"We want people to pay more attention to your eyes when they look at you.  A great rhinoplasty procedure can actually take people's attention away from your nose."

What features are commonly addressed?

  • bump on the top of the nose
  • downturned nose
  • too big for your features
  • broad, bulbous tip of the nose
  • collapsed or irregular nose possibly related to previous surgery (revision rhinoplasty)
  • nasal breathing problems
  • and many others

What is a septoplasty?
A septoplasty is a common procedure performed inside the nose to correct a septal deviation.  The septum is a thin structure that separates the right and left nasal cavity. A deviated septum, often caused by trauma or abnormal growth, may cause you to have trouble breathing.  Many people who snore have a deviated septum.

Will insurance pay for this procedure?

Many insurance plans will cover procedures that can help you breathe.  This includes a septoplasty.  Cosmetic procedures such as a rhinoplasty is not covered by insurance.  The total cost of a rhinoplasty (for cosmetic purposes) can be reduced if you are having a septoplasty at the same time.

How much time will I need off work or school?
The procedure is done on an outpatient basis.  Dr. Sandel does not pack the nose, so patients are very comfortable and have minimal pain immediately after surgery.  An external nasal splint is often required and will stay on the nose for approximately 1 week.

Many patients feel well enough to return to work or school within 1-2 days after the surgery.  However, you will feel a little swollen and have some congestion.  We ask that you limit your physical activity for 5-7 days or until the splint is removed.

"What Treatment Is Right For Me?"
Discussion Series : Social Downtime

Half face eyes

The desire to make changes and improve your appearance can be overwhelming and confusing when it comes to researching all the treatment options currently available.  In this series, we will discuss common questions about treatments in facial rejuvenation.

Q. How much downtime can I expect?

A.  Downtime can differ greatly from patient to patient.  One of the most difficult things to predict or control in patients is swelling and bruising.  Bruising can develop from simple treatments such as BOTOX, Dysport or dermal fillers.  This is rare, but certainly can happen especially in patients who take aspirin or ibuprofen type products or in patients who simply tend to bruise easily.

BOTOX and Dermal Fillers - Minimal to no downtime

Bruising is the most common side effect.  This can be reduced by careful injections and using ice immediately following the injection. However, if there is a small vein that can't be seen on the surface of the skin, the needle may contact the vein and cause a bruise.  This may last a few days.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation - 5 - 10 days of downtime

A deep laser skin rejuvenation will cause swelling and pinkness of the skin.  Once the skin heals in 5-7 days, makeup can be applied. Makeup is usually required for another 1-2 weeks to cover light pink and healthy skin until it resolves.

Facelift and Eyelid Surgery - 7 - 10 days of downtime

Most patients will have a yellowish bruise that persists for

7-10 days after their surgery.  Swelling may also be present for a few weeks longer.  At The Sandel Center, we provide a complimentary makeup session 10 days after surgery.  This will help you get back to work or social activities as quickly as possible.

Rhinoplasty - 3 - 7 days of downtime

Patients who have Rhinoplasty can expect to have a skin colored splint on the nose for 7 days after surgery.  There will be swelling that can cause the nose to feel congested.  Patients typically feel well enough to return to work or school in only a few days if they don't mind wearing the splint around other people.  Sometimes a bruise can develop under the eyes that can last for 7 - 10 days.
