Greetings!

Greetings from the campus of Michigan State University! You'll notice that we've focused a great deal on Africa in this issue of Ventures. We are particularly interested in sharing the great work our faculty and students are doing in this country as we embark on a first - a College of Social Science Alumni Study Abroad Trip to South Africa. The itinerary for this two-week trip in the summer of 2012 will include Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, and Cape Town. To request a brochure for this trip, please contact Vicki Essenmacher at vicki@msu.edu.

Students Partner with Communities while Studying in South Africa
Brad Hastings and Vuyo
Brad Hastings (Anthropology 2011) and Vuyo, a 7-year old from Zonkizizwe, South Africa

The College of Social Science takes great pride in broadening the education of students through experiential learning overseas. One extraordinary example of this is an Interdisciplinary Studies course in Race Relations in South Africa led by Social Science faculty member Jeanne Gazel.

Students use South African literature and scholarly texts to gain a wider understanding of how race, class, and gender relations underlie current developmental issues in the region. They enrich their learning in a real-world setting by working with an organization dedicated to improving community life.

Adlers Provide Global Experience for Students

Ed Adler (Social Science 1962) and his wife Gretchen understand the importance of a study abroad experience for students. They were pleased to be able to provide similar experiences for students through their gift establishing the M. Peter McPherson Study Abroad Fund in the College of Social Science.

"The world has become so much smaller," says Ed Adler.  "As a result, it is important for students to become exposed to other cultures and understand other parts of the world.  That's why we established this scholarship making it possible for a broader range of students to study abroad and prepare themselves for today's world."
