Time spent on the boat this weekend reminded me of life's waves, too: the ones we make and the ones we deal with. If we are alive and breathing, we are dealing with and making waves. And so it should be, lest we be stagnant and more like the buoy simply staying in one place as it rides the waves and waits during the calm periods.
A few years ago, as I was dealing with some significant changes in life, I wrote what I fancied to be lyrics for a song about life's waves. Whether a song resides in the words or not, I do not know. But today, the message seemed as important as when I tried to convey to others that life is about change and directions, and we must deal with the wakes we make.
Watch Your Wake
Red sky at morning
Sailors take warning
Red sky at night
Sailors delight
We have no such signals
As we plan our life's journeys
Into uncharted waters or seas often sailed
No matter our trek
Be it to near or far
We must leave a wake as we cut the water
Have the courage to deal with the wake you make
Ya gotta dare and deal
With the wake you make
Making some changes
Making a difference
As we cleft the seas
On our journey
To live is to affect
The world that surrounds us
'Cause we must push aside as we move ahead
We must weigh anchor
If we expect to arrive
Into the discovery of our lives
Have the courage to deal with the wake you make
Ya gotta dare and deal
With the wake you make
Watch your wake
The buoy sign says
It doesn't command
That we stop moving
Sail on, sail on
Into life waters ahead
Know the seas will be different
Because of your course
Soon waters will be
Again as they were
Have the courage to deal with the wake you make
Ya gotta dare and deal
With the wake you make
Deal with the wake, the changes, the forces
Created by you on your path
Your life is of your creation
Your journey is yours to own
Have the courage to deal with the wake you make
Ya gotta dare and deal with the wake you make
Dare, dare, dare
And deal
With the wake you make
