Listen to Quiet
Listening to life involves much more than listening to words of those around us. It involves listening in the moments. On a visit this weekend to my middle son and his girlfriend, he wanted to take me to one of his running trails at a beautiful park area near Lake Travis. As we hiked the areas that he and his dog run, we paused at a quiet place and talked a bit. And then we didn't. With a tilt of his head, he directed me to the sounds of the creek flowing and gurgling. I gestured upwards, drawing his attention to the sounds of the rain drops hitting the leaves high above us. There was more silence before we talked again. We must listen in the moment. In the moment, we can attend to the sounds and intentions of those near us; in the moment, we can take in the lessons from friends, family and strangers; and, in the moment, we can hear what our heart and soul need: nature, silence, subtly.
