Greetings!
Fall- the season of change. Life speeds up after the relative ease of summer. We turn the clocks back and marvel at the colorful landscape. This time of year reminds us to celebrate the beauty in our lives and to be cognizant of what we hold dear, all the while knowing that change is imminent...but it does not have to be negative. With change can come new opportunities, new experiences, new insights. But we miss the gifts of change if we are too busy looking backward with regret or nostalgia, rather than forward with anticipation and curiosity.
Here at One Journey, we are excited about our new course offering, What's Next, for anyone in mid-life experiencing change or wondering how to proactively design the second half of life. The program runs January through March 2011. We hope you can join us.
Til then, take a moment each day to embrace the changes around you, while you find peace in all that remains constant and eternal.
Please feel free to share this newsletter with friends and colleagues.
Happy Fall,
Renée and Di |

Master Your Money and Fill that Bucket by Amy Lampert, Contributing Columnist
Many of my contemporaries are in deep reflection about the "rest of their lives." We are at that age where we are acutely aware of the things on our bucket list... something as simple as wanting to experience a jet ski (that would be on MY bucket list) or something as profound as leaving a legacy to society. Yet, while these lists are true desires, they aren't being achieved. So often I hear "I wish I could, but" and the "but" is often related to finances.
When you allow finances to block your dreams, a deal with the devil (money) is forged, and you feel stuck. This sense of feeling trapped is an impediment to a full life, happy relationships and work satisfaction. And sometimes, all it takes is some knowledge and information to master one's own financial destiny to allay these feelings and help you live your dreams.
For those readers who may not know where to start, and feel daunted by the whole topic of money mastery, here is a checklist of areas of financial literacy you could use to start taking charge of your financial plan:
Budgets and Cash Flows: If you have delegated this function to a partner in the past, and have little idea what it takes financially for you and your family to live, this is a good place to start.
Credit: Know how credit works. If you do not have credit in your own name, get it immediately. Understand the basics of credit reports and profiles.
Financial Documents: Know their location and the institutions where family assets are held.
Investments: Understand the risk profile of the investments your family's assets are in.
Taxes: Like many people who file jointly, you probably just sign the 1040; delve a little deeper to understand.
Health Care and other insurances: What would happen if you had to provide your own healthcare? What are the contingencies?
How Property is Titled: Home(s), car, other assets; understand the difference between "Joint With Rights of Survivorship" and "Joint Tenants in Common"
Estate Plans: Understand what happens upon the death of you or your partner; know the named beneficiaries of policies or trusts
For some this might seem overwhelming at first, so chew off one bite at a time. If you would like assistance on this journey of financial literacy please take note of the Unpack Your Bag, Lady workshop mentioned in this newsletter.

Unpack Your Bag, Lady Workshop with Amy Lampert and Marilyn Edelson

· Is Money a loaded issue for you? Your family members? Your friends?
· Do you find yourself in a position (through divorce, widowhood, a family legacy) of responsibility for your own finances, but feel ill-prepared?
· Are you confused about the advice you read and hear in the financial media or from bankers or advisors?
· Do you avoid or procrastinate or delegate financial affairs to others because you find financial affairs and investing overwhelming?
Combining 10 dimensions of financial literacy with understanding of the way in which money is a metaphor for many of the primary needs and feelings humans have, Amy Lampert of WomensWorth has partnered with financial therapist, Marilyn Edelson in a workshop called Unpack Your Bag, Lady. Research shows it is the emotional and psychological issues, as much as a lack of understanding about the world of financial services, that interfere with our best intentions at mastering our financial lives.
For more information on this workshop series starting in November, visit Unpack Your Bag, Lady or contact Amy Lampert at womensworth@me.com. |
