| From the Administration
Thankfully, the rain held off last Sunday, and we were delighted to see so many of our students and their parents and grandparents at the Run/Walkathon. Organizer (and Hillel parent) Mitch Miller told us that there were over 450 registrants!
There were also over 50 volunteers, many of whom were our parents and teachers. The event could not have run so smoothly without their hard work and we want to extend a huge thank you to them all for making this year's Walkathon such a success.
It's hard to believe we have already finished our last full week of school. Our grade 8 class is graduating on Monday and our grade 12 class is graduating on Wednesday. It is always hard to say good-bye to students who have been a part of Hillel for so many years. But the advantage of our tightly knit Jewish community is that we will be able to continue to watch our graduates grow and mature into the great Jewish adults we know they will become.
Shabbat shalom,

Walkathon

|
Many Hillel families came out to this year's Walkathon. They had the choice of running or walking 1 or 3 km and even got to time themselves and find out how fast they went. Afterwards, there was lunch and activities for the kids.

Bansho Math

|
|
Recently, Hillel's math teachers participated in a workshop on Bansho problem solving, lead by Ms. Myhill. 'Bansho' is Japanese for 'blackboard', and it involves encouraging students to find multiple solutions for the same problem. The work is then posted on the blackboard and discussed as a class. This helps students develop their problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to explain their thinking. Ms. Myhill has also been going into the classrooms to work with teachers.
Above, Josh explains his solution to a problem to the other students in grade one. Below, Ms. Myhill discusses the different solutions with the students.

The grade 8 students had a great time on their grad trip this week. They went up to Camp B'nai Brith and got to take some cool day trips. Above, they head into the Lusk Caves to do some exploring.
|
It's Magic! Magician Elliott Smith was invited to mentor our Special Interest Learners group, who have been studying magic. He taught them some super secret magic tricks (which they have sworn to keep secret) and then the students in grades 2 and 3 enjoyed a wonderful magic show.

Bennett, in grade 1, made it to 100 books just in time for summer. Yay Bennett! |
Grade 6 Social Studies students visited the Museum of Civilization this week, touring through 400 years of Canadian history and then watching an IMAX movie. Above, the students learn about New France from the 'Innkeeper'. Upon finding out she was talking to Jewish students, the innkeeper told them the story of Esther Brandeau, a French teenager who was the first Jewish woman in New France. She pretended to be a boy and Catholic to get passage to New France, but once she was discovered, refused to give up her Jewish faith.
Grade 1 went to the Museum of Science and Technology, where they participated in two workshops: The Magic of Colours and Boatbuilding. They also got to explore the museum, including the very best part - the crazy kitchen! (below).
|
The kindergarten students also got a field trip - to the Experimental Farm. They got to see and touch many of the animals, including getting a chance to brush a calf, like Jessica, above.
