From the Administration

Some parents might have been hearing recently about the new SMART boards we recently had installed in 3 classrooms. SMART boards are interactive whiteboards (you can learn more here) that allow for much more dynamic and interactive teaching and presenting. Currently, the boards are in classrooms for Morah Ada (grade 3), Ms. Coghlin (grade 5) and Mrs. Graham (grades 5 - 8). Our goal is to install a SMART board in every classroom over the next two years.

We have our incredibly generous PTA to thank for these first 3 boards. We also have you to thank, for supporting our PTA fundraisers, from hot lunches to school supplies. The funds raised go towards many small but necessary things, such as buses for field trips and special foods for holiday celebrations. However, due to your support, they are also able to support our school in big ways as well. The SMART boards are a remarkable addition to the classroom. (Below, Jasmine, Gil, the Big Bad Wolf, and Elisheva use the SMART board to perform a skit in French.)smart

This Sunday is our Run/Walkathon. The students (and teachers!) have been working very hard to raise money and the enthusiasm is running high. If you haven't yet registered, it's not too late.  Please come to the school gym on Sunday at 8:30 am in order to register.  We hope to see you there!

Shavuot Celebration
On Tuesday, the students celebrated Shavuot by bringing in donations of food for the Kosher Food Bank. Every class created a basket and filled it with food. (Left, two students from each class carried with the donation baskets.)
The students in grade 4 led the assembly, performing a skit between songs which were presented from different grades.

Below, Jordan, Dalia and Sam performing the skit.

Grade 3 Tours Israel

The students in grade 3 have been working hard for the past several weeks, learning about Israeli cities and towns. Each student chose one to profile, learning all about it and creating a diorama to illustrate a unique element of that area. They then welcomed parents and grandparents to their classroom to tour Israel.

Right, Justin tells Sabrina's mom about the Baha'i Shrine and Gardens in Haifa. Below, Yael (with Sabrina's little sister Jessica), tells Mr. Kom about the grotto at Rosh Hanikra.

The students in grade 4 Extended French and Social Studies have been learning about medieval times recently. Each student chose a profession and profiled it for the rest of the class. Above, left, Jonathan poses as a knight. Right, Noah is a monk.

 pancakes

Grade 3 had a special dress-down day today. They got to come to school in their PJs and have a pancake breakfast. Right, Morah Yaffa demonstrates her skills as a short order cook by managing two skillets at once. Left, David and Jillian enjoy their pancakes.

Grade 2 got a field trip to the Aviation Museum this week, where they learned how planes fly. Above, the students pose with the paper airplanes they made and then tested outside.

Community Garden
The students have been having a great time painting the raised garden we have in the playground, and doing lots of planting. It really beautifies the area and is a great way for students in all grades to get some hands-on learning.

Left, Samantha waters the flowers during recess. Below, Ma'ayan, Noah and Mia relax on the bench assembled by the students in grade 5.

Three of our students just cut their long hair to donate to make wigs for sick children. Above, Kayla (grade 3) and her cousins Rebecca (grade 6) and Jessica (grade 4) hold their braids and show off their cute new hair cuts. (Just in time for the hot weather!) (photo: Sharon Reichstein)

 circus

Last week, the student of ADK had a lot of fun presenting their end-of-year circus performance for the residents of Hillel Lodge.
