From the Administration

As you will see below, the classwork continues, but there are a lot of signs that the school year is drawing to a close.

One sure sign that summer is almost here is that there are only two more days of uniform wear! Wednesday and Thursday of next week are Shavuot and Friday, June 10th is our final dress-down day of the year. Friday is also the final day to hand in your used uniforms for resale. We know our students are really looking forward to getting to wear their summer clothes for the last two weeks of school.

June is also the time you can get your school supply shopping for next September out of the way by ordering now through the PTA - look for more information below.

Finally, now is also the time to buy your yearbook! The grade 8 students have spent months working very hard to produce this beautiful book and it's a great memento of the school year.  Yearbook orders can be dropped into the office.

 Important Notes
  • Mrs. Waxman will be at school for 8 am every morning in order to walk with the students who would like to prepare for the Walkathon.  She would love to have a big group of children to practice with her.
  • Many of our students and families have signed up for the Run/Walkathon and now we'd like to concentrate on our fundraising efforts for this upcoming event.  We are so thrilled that this year, all donations collected from OJCS fundraising will come directly to our school.
  • The PTA is running their very successful school supply fundraiser again this year. To order your supplies for next year, download their form from the website and submit it to the PTA before June 30.
Used Uniform Information
The Used Uniform Sale is coming up soon, on Monday, June 13 and Tuesday, June 14, from 3 - 4:30 pm. As with last year, the last two weeks of school will be uniform-free. Further, the Friday before, June 10th, will be our last dress-down day, as well as the last day to hand in your used uniforms for sale.

To hand in your uniforms for sale, go to the website and click on the link to download the form (one per child). Please note that the date to submit an order to Top Marks for new uniforms and ensure their arrival before next school year has been moved from June 15th to June 17th.

Chumash Party   chumash

The students in grade 2 celebrated receiving their Chumashim this week. They danced and sang for the proud parents and then enjoyed cake. (Photos on the left: Michelle Echenberg)

yom yerushalyim

In honour of Yom Yerushalyim, several students in grade 6 (including Daniel and Gil, above left) led a broadcast, and the grade 1 students sang.

 breakfast

The students in grade 1 got a treat this week when they got to have a gourmet breakfast served at school. The students have been busy learning about the words for different foods. They got bagels, cereal and lots of fruit. Morah Sarah and Mrs. Bennett want to thank the volunteer parents who came in to help feed a lot of small students with remarkably big appetites.

hebrew

The students in grade 5 have been working hard writing and creating their own books in Hebrew. Once finished, they took them for a test run by reading them to the grade 3 students. Above, Bailey reads hers.

Scientists in School   scientists

scientists

The students in grade 5 learned a chemistry lesson from the Scientist's visit this time. Above, Jordana, Soshana and Kenny perform a variety of chemical tests on different substances. To the right, Jonah uses a chemical reaction to inflate a balloon.

In Grade 3, the lesson from Scientist in School was on matter and energy. Below, the Scientist teaches David, Jonah and Rebekah about the properties of magnetism.

 madagascar

A guest speaker visited grade 5 on Tuesday. Each month, grade 5 'visits' a different country, and this month, they are in Madagascar. Kathy Lucking came to talk about the schooling system in Madagascar. Kathy is a Canadian elementary school teacher who has built two schools in Madagascar. She told the kids about student life there, where many kids aren't able to attend school, and many others have trouble learning because they are hungry.
