From the Administration
This week started off on a serious note, commemorating Yom HaZikaron. But, as in Israel, the solemnity of Israel's Rememberance Day on Monday turned into a celebration of Israel's 63rd birthday on Tuesday. We were delighted to welcome members of the community,Tamir, Ganon preschool, Early Beginnings, students from Torah Academy, guests from Hillel Lodge and representatives from the Embassy. It was a day filled with fun, with dancing in the hallways and playground.

Watching, we couldn't help but think that this is what Jewish school is about - our students celebrating their connection to Israel and the joy of their Judaism. And it was delightful to see our non-Jewish teachers throwing themselves into the experience, singing Hatikvah and learning dances from their Israeli counterparts along with the students.

Today, we told the students about the Walkathon coming up on June 12. This year, all the funds raised will be going towards Jewish education. It costs $20 to register (click the ad below to register online) and when you do, you will be asked which school you support; all donations will come directly to our school. You must register by May 27 to receive a t-shirt, a race bib personalized with your first name and a timing chip. This year, the focus is on children, so there will be a 1 km and 3 km walk/run. And, of course, there will be lots of food and fun!

Yom HaZikaron   Yom Hazikaron

On Monday, the students commemorated Yom HaZikaron, remembering fallen soldiers and victims of terror. The students in grade 6 led the ceremony. Morah Noga's sister Irit Beck (pictured above), told the audience about their brother, Yoram Shiloni, who died in Lebanon in 1972. A colonel, Boaz Amidror, from the Israeli Embassy in Washington, also addressed the students. Several teachers also participated, reading letters written by those touched by war in Israel.

Yom HaZikaron   Yom HaAtzmaut

Yom HaAtzmautYom Ha'Atzmaut was a lot of fun for our students. They started the day with a ceremony for the whole community. The Tamir choir sang, as well as students from Ganon. (Above, the students from grade 2 get everyone singing along with them.) The students from grade 4 served as MCs - right are Jessica and Sam.

For lunch, the entire school enjoyed a falafel picnic on the front lawn, thanks to the PTA and Creative Kosher Catering.

In the afternoon, the students from grade 5 held a Yom Ha'Azmaut Fair for younger students, including a shuk and games to play. They raised over $140 for the school's Chesed Fund!

At the end of the day, the Israeli teachers taught the students and other teachers Israeli dancing in the school yard. (Below, photos from the lunch and dancing.)

The Scientist Comes Back   scientists

scientistsScientist in School came back to ADK to teach the students about Backyard Bugs. The students learned the parts of a bug and how their bodies work.

Above, Dylan and the others in his group get to look through microscopes for a close-up look at bug bodies. Left, Oliver looks at a bug through special glasses that allow him to see the way a bug sees - with many lenses rather than just one. Below, Stella, Ahron and Ashton use party toys as butterfly tongues, pretending to suck nectar from flowers. (Photos: Itzy Kamil)
