From the Administration It has been a quiet week around here, with many of our grade 8 students off at mini-enrichment courses.
We started off on a solemn note, with the commemoration of Yom HaShoah. We thought the students from the high school and grade 7, who led the assembly, demonstrated great maturity, and we were proud of all our students for demonstrating the respect that is appropriate for such an event. We have one more serious event to mark - Yom HaZikaron - and then it's time to have fun and celebrate Israel's Independence Day! We will be giving the students a free falafel lunch from David Smith's Creative Kosher Caterer, and have some great events planned, such as a community flag-raising ceremony, displays of Israeli products, the Carmel Shuk for our grades ADK through 4 and so much more!
The party continues on Tuesday after school, at Landsdowne Park. There is a community-wide celebration at which all of our students are invited to march in a parade. We hope to see you there too! (See the ad below for all the details.)
Shabbat shalom,

Vote Results
As we told you last week, Hillel students participated in a mock Federal election, voting for the candidates in the school's riding. Originally, we had intended to have our polls open for first recess and lunch only, but voting was so popular (line-ups out the door!) that the students were allowed to vote at afternoon recess and after school as well.
Our votes were counted, along with those of students in the rest of the country and, had the student vote counted, we would have had a Conservative minority with an NDP opposition, but the Liberals faired much better at the hands of the students. You can see the full vote results on the Student Vote website.
Interestingly, while the student vote in Ottawa Centre mirrored the real one and elected NDP Paul Dewar, Hillel students voted very heavily Conservative - as the chart breaking down Hillel's vote (above) demonstrates.

This week, the students in grade 6 got to meet the author of a book they'd studied in class. Caroline Pignat wrote the book Egghead, which was also a previous Silver Birch selection. Ms. Pignat, who is a teacher and lives in Ottawa, told the students how she developed her ideas for the book and also talked to them about bullying, a topic the novel addresses. She then went on to teach the students about how to develop their own ideas for writing, as well as answering many questions about writing in general, and Egghead specifically.
You can learn more about Ms. Pignat and her books by going to her blog.
