From the Administration
Welcome back! We hope you all enjoyed your Passover break. The students certainly have returned revitalized and ready to learn!

Hillel has been part of a fascinating experiment, called Student Vote. Our lower grade social studies teacher, Mrs. Signer, signed Hillel up and received everything we needed to turn the chapel into a polling booth. The students have been learning about the election process in Canada, the issues, the parties and the candidates running in this riding. We have been amazed and impressed with how engaged our students are in the process. The teachers report vigorous debates in their classrooms that didn't stop once the students left class. It was easy to believe as we stood in the chapel and listened to the discussions and arguments going on between our students as they waited for their turns to vote. We certainly hope they keep up this sort of enthusiasm until they are old enough to vote. In the meantime, ask your children what they think of the election - you might be surprised by their opinions.

Shabbat shalom,

 Important Notes
  • The AJA 50+ anniversary gala is coming up this month, the funds from which
will be benefitting Hillel. If you have anything that you could offer to be included in their silent auction, please email Nicole Goldstone or Gina Camel-Toueg and let them know.
  • Look for Yearbook sales to begin soon. The cost will be $20 - for a hardcover, full-colour yearbook!
  • The PTA's magazine campaign in now on. Renewing your subscription through the school is easy, costs nothing extra and supports the school. To take a look at the over 600 titles to choose from, go to www.qsp.ca. Our group number is #11529.
Uniform Information

The date for the uniform fitting is Tuesday, May 3, 3:30-7 pm, in the Hillel gym. This is primarily for new families, but it is a good time to take a look at any new pieces you might want to order or double-check sizes.

We are in the process of organizing our Used Uniform Sale again this year. As with last year, the last two weeks of school will be uniform-free, and we will have the sale before Top Mark's final order date to get new uniform pieces before the start of school next year. Look for the particulars and the downloadable form in next week's Hadashot.

Hillel Academy Votes
voting

Thanks to Student Vote, our students from grades 2 - 8 got the opportunity to vote in our upcoming Federal election. (Grade 5 provided our election officials.) Their votes will be sent to be counted with the votes from students across the country, and the results will be announced after the election. It will be interesting to see if their results differ from the official results!

Above left, the students line up at recess to vote. Right, Gregory votes in the voting booth. Below, Shira places her ballot in the ballot box as the election officials, Jacob, Joshua and Opal, officiate.

Silver Birch Author Visits
Silver Birch author

Members of the Silver Birch Club, plus the students in grade 3, got a treat their first day back to school - a visit from author Kate Jaimet. Ms. Jaimet, an Ottawa author and journalist, has been nominated for a Silver Birch award (plus several others) for her book, Dunces Anonymous. She talked with the students about writing her novel, and had fun acting out a scene from her book with several students. Above, Ms. Jaimet poses with her actors, Temima, Brandon, Dahlia, Jonah and David.

maps

Above, a montage of projects the grade 6 extended social studies created to represent different routes that European explorers took on their voyages around the world.

food bank

The students in grade 8 present Linda Shiff of the Ottawa Kosher Food Bank with a cheque for money raised from the mishloach manot at Purim. Ms. Shiff then wrote to Hillel, thanking us for our consistent and generous support.
