From the Administration
We want to let you know that our report cards, which were scheduled to come out next Friday, January 28, will be delayed a week, to February 4. As many of you already know, we are implementing a new report card system. Our goal, as always, is to provide the best service to our parents and it was with that goal in mind that we embarked on this process. Unfortunately, developing something new does not always go as smoothly as hoped and we are experiencing some bumps along the way.
The new report card system is also tied in with the progress reports we sent out in the fall. We were very sorry for the problems with the progress reports and we want to ensure that they do not happen again, which is why we are taking one extra week to prepare the report cards. After the report cards are delivered, we will resend the progress reports, as we promised to do in the fall. We are very sorry for the inconvenience this might have caused.

- Next week's school-wide CanWest Spelling Bee has been moved from Wednesday, January 26 to Thursday, January 27, still at 1:15 pm in the gym. We have Scientists in School coming in to a couple of grades on Wednesday and don't want our spellers to miss out on the fun.

Even with all the snowy and cold weather, our students had fun celebrating Tu Bishvat this week. Our garden has returned to the front foyer, so the students got to learn about Tu Bishvat among the trees. Above, Morah Ricky reads a story to her grade 2 class after eating fruit in the garden. Below, Morah Ada helps her grade 3s enjoy all kinds of fresh fruit.
|
Art class also had a Tu Bishvat theme, as all the students made necklaces and pins out of beans and seeds.
|
| Above, Lucy and Jordan both reached 100 books this week! |

Penpals for Grade 5
The grade 5 students have become penpals with a grade 4/5 class at Petit Casimer Memorial School in Lac Brochet, Manitoba. The community has 700 people and is only accessible by plane. The students are learning a lot about the Dene culture while their pen pals are learning about our lifestyle in Ottawa and Judaism. Below, left, Opal and Bailey hold up the pen pal letters they received and, right, Matan is busy writing back to his pen pal and answering all his questions.

Grade 6 Art Show Progress
 |
Grade 6 has been working hard on their Art show for the spring. The students all chose artists to learn about and have been trying to recreate their works. Above, Daniel holds up a piece for Haley and Kyra to critique. Below, Uri shows his reproduction of Salvador Dali.
|
Grade 2 got a visit from Scientists in School this week, learning about simple machines. Above, Boris finds out the best sort of level to help him lift Sadie.

Looking For ...
- our high school students have been working hard weaving sleeping mats to be sent to Haiti, using, believe it or not, old milk bags. They've been so industrious they have run out of bags, so if you have empty bags - the large ones that hold the 3 smaller bags of milk - please give them to us. We have a box by the office for them.
- any Gone With the Wind memorabilia that can be loaned to the high school for use in their play in February. If you have anything to offer, please email director Cynthia Bates.
