From the Administration This is the third year we have held a snowsuit drive at our school to benefit the Snowsuit Fund. We have to admit, we wondered if perhaps this year we would not get the number of donations as we have in the previous two. After all, we have a small parent body and it makes sense that after clearing out the basement of all your old winter gear for the past two years, we would only end up receiving what the children outgrew the year before.
So we were delighted and amazed as the donations poured in once again the colder the weather got. We got snowsuits, coats and snow pants ranging from infant to adult sizes. Handmade scarves, hand-me-down boots and a remarkable amount of new mitts and hats appeared in our front lobby. On Thursday, we bagged up 14 industrial-sized garbage bags and donated it all to the Snowsuit Fund.
Your continued unflagging generosity each year warms our hearts. Thank you. Shabbat Shalom and have a great break,

Some Important Notes
- See you on Monday, January 3rd!
|
ADK got to have a different sort of dress-down day this week, when they came to school in their pajamas. They brought their stuffies and were served a delicious pancake breakfast by their teachers - who also came to school in their PJs.
Right, Julia shows off her pancake smile and a real smile too. Below, Ahron, Noam, Tallula, Ariella and Emma enjoy their breakfast.

Each month, the grade 5s are travelling to a different country or region. In December, they travelled to Antarctica. Students worked in pairs to create a tourism booth. Their goal was to create a brochure and tourism booth to entice other students to want to go to Antarctica and to book with their company. Students from other grades were then brought in to visit the booths and vote on which company they would book with. The 5s sold their Antarctica trip packages by focusing on the beautiful scenery, seals, penguins and ice caves. Above, Soshana and Noah at their booth.

From the Rabbi's desk ...
At the Ottawa Jewish Community School, we ensure that our school kitchen is kosher under supervision from the Vaad Ha'kashrut. By the same token, school trips must also follow that same standard. Whether our school attends a Camp B'nai Brith program, or attends a Senators hockey game, we have a responsibility to our students to ensure that the kashrut laws of our faith are upheld.
While obviously families choose their own life style, the school is bound by Halacha, and any and all programs under its heading, along with their participants, students and teachers, must respect those boundaries.

Above, grades 6-8 had a special treat on Monday, attending a Senators hockey game. They even got to stay late as the game went into overtime.
