From the Administration
Our students have benefited from two great experiences this week. Those in the Silver Birch Reading Club have just returned from a marvelous field trip to Toronto, where they attended the Silver Birch Award ceremony and got to meet some of the authors they read this year. It is great that the students, after reading all these Canadian books all year, got to meet some of the authors they have read, as well as experiencing a different city.

Those in grades 5 - 8 who stayed at home were treated to Tamir's remarkable production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Our kids (and teachers) were spellbound by the play and are delighted to have had the opportunity to see it. We are very proud of grade 8 student Shira Benlolo, who was in the play's Youth Choir; and of YRSH grade 11 student Jamie Greenberg, who played Pharoah's son and even performed a solo.

Speaking of pride, we are also bursting with pride over the Cappies nominations earned by several members of the cast of our play, Brighton Beach Memoirs! Itzy Kamil was nominated for Comic Actor in a Play. Itzy and Raphael Sandler were nominated for Ensemble in a Play. And Michaela Sadinsky was nominated for Lead Actress in a Play. Awards will be presented at the Cappies Gala on Sunday, June 13, but no matter what happens there, we already .

Some Important Notes
Please take note of the following:
  • Don't forget that the sale of Loblaws cards is an ongoing fundraiser at the school. You can get the cards from either Tal Gilboa or Pearl Beausoleil (cash or cheque only).
  • Our Lost and Found is overflowing with clothing. We still have snowpants, jackets and many sweatshirts. If you child is missing anything, please stop by to take a look. We will be donating the unclaimed clothing after next week.
  • A pink
  • Lunch notes: today was the last milk day; hot dog day has been moved from Thursday, May 27 to Tuesday, May 25. Also, please note that Tuesday, May 18th will be a milk day so we can celebrate Shavuot with the students by giving them an ice cream treat.
  • You will soon be hearing from the board in connection with the school's upcoming AGM, set for June 15 at 7:00 pm. In accordance with the by-laws, please contact Nicole Rosenberg of the Governance Committee if you would like to suggest any nominees for the board to be considered by the governance committee as part of its nomination process.
Shavuotfood bank
Next week we are having a short Shavuot assembly, to which each class will bring in a basket of donated food. This is your last chance to send in a small kosher item, dried or canned food, for the class to present at the assembly.

Thanks to all the families who have already sent in food! As you can see, the items are starting to pile up!
Heads Up! Uniforms and School Supplies
The end of the year is coming up with surprising speed so we want to let you know about two important upcoming events. The PTA will be bringing back its useful and popular school supply fundraiser. They will be putting together supply kits for every grade, delivered directly to your child's classroom for the start of school in September. Stay tunes for details on how to order.

Also, we've had a lot of questions, so we know you'll be happy to hear that our used uniform sale has been set for Monday, June 14 and Tuesday, June 15. We are working out the final details and will let you know them soon. We can tell you that, in order facilitate an easier sale, the last two weeks of school - Monday, June 14 to Thursday, June 24th - will be uniform free.

Grade 4 Plants Treestrees2
Hillel got a little bit greener this week, as the 4th grade students planted three trees out in the playground. The students purchased the trees with the Green Apple Grant money they were awarded earlier this year.

Gardening was paired with science, as the students first learned about the properties of soil and then  pitched in to dig the holes and plant the trees. Above, the students check out the soil and they help to dig out a hole. Right, Jonah holds a tree straight as the others push and shovel dirt into the hole. Below, Jamie Jaye, Noa, Josh, Jonah, Ben and Noah pose with Ms. Coghlin and their newly-planted trees.

Ms. Coghlin and the 4s want to give a huge thank you to Campus Gardener Bill for his very valuable help!

Sports Day
The weather could not have been better on Tuesday for our Sports Day. The students had all had a great time competing in a variety of activities, as well as making banners and cheers for their teams. Below, grades 1 and 2 red and green teams are all after the ball in soccer.

Grade Six Meets a Guide Dog
guide dogs1
The grade 6 students have been busy this spring raising money for their Tikkun Olam project - Guide Dogs for the Blind. The students decorated and sold cupcakes and created lovely crafts to sell to raise the funds. They raised over $1000 and split the money between a guide dog organization here and one in Israel. Above, Olivia and Samara present a cheque to a representative from Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind. Below, Samara, Cameron, Marlin, Noah, Olivia and Taylor meet Bob and his guide dog Abraham.

Looking for ...
  • Morah Ruthie is looking for several items to create a small sitting area in our front foyer. She would love the donation of a bench or any other furniture to make the area comfortable. Also appreciated would be coffee tables that the students would be able to decorate with a mosaic. Please contact Morah Ruthie if you can be of any help.
  • Mrs. Mackintosh in the library is looking for donations of updated, children's audio visual material. She would like English, French and Hebrew books with tapes/CDs and children's DVDs both fiction and non-fiction.
