From the Administration Our Sports Day on Monday was postponed until next Tuesday, but that doesn't mean our students had a quiet week. As you will see below, it was as busy as ever.
One highly anticipated event was the visit our 6th grade students took to Charles H. Hulse elementary school, out in Alta Vista. Six years ago, our school was approached by Patrick Mascoe, a 6th grade teacher at Hulse, looking for a way to promote greater tolerance among his primarily Muslim students.
The students get pen pals and write to each other in the months leading up to the day when they all get together at Hulse. The students participate in various activities together - games and teambuilding exercises - then listen to Holocaust survivor David Shentow in the afternoon.
The students love the experience and this year many have taken the connection one step further and become Facebook friends with their pen pals.
The event attracted some media attention, so you can read an article about it in the Ottawa Sun, or see a great video on the Ottawa Citizen website. And speaking of media, we had CTV in our school on Tuesday, filming a story about how proactive our school is in fighting the spread of germs, post-H1N1. You can find that story by going to http://ottawa.ctv.ca/ and clicking on the "News at 6" link in the video player.
Shabbat Shalom,

Some Important Notes
Please take note of the following:- Don't forget that the sale of Loblaws cards is an ongoing fundraiser at the school. You can get the cards from either Tal Gilboa or Pearl Beausoleil.
- Our Sports day has been postponed to Tuesday, May 11. Remember to dress your kids in their colours!
- Shavuot is quickly approaching and while our Kosher Food drive is gathering steam, we are still looking for more donations, so if you haven't sent in yours, there's still time! The boxes are in the front hall.
- You will soon be hearing from the board
in connection with the school's upcoming AGM, set for June 15 at
7:00 pm. In accordance with the by-laws, please contact Nicole Rosenberg
of the Governance Committee if you would
like to suggest any nominees for the board to be considered by the governance committee as part of its nomination process.

Hillel Visits Hulse
The grade 6 students have been
corresponding with pen pals across the city, at Charles H. Hulse school.
The students at Hulse are primarily Muslim, and the two groups have
been getting to know each other and finding out they aren't so
different. On Tuesday, the students finally got to meet each
other, as the Hillel students went to spend the day at Hulse. They spent
the morning playing get-to-know-you games. In the afternoon, they all
heard Holocaust survivor David Shentow talk about his experiences.
Below, Jordan with her penpal Leila during the scavenger hunt and Omri playing basketball with his penpal as Rabbi Simes looks on.

Scientists in Grade 6
The grade 6 students got their turn with Scientists in Schools this week, learning about Earth and Space Systems. They learned about comets, planet properties and even a little about space and time. Below, Jake, Maxim, Hannah and Noya race to place the planets in their proper orbit around the sun before the other groups do.

The Jewish Archives has set up a display that was originally created for Ottawa city hall in the front hall of Hillel Academy on Lillian Freiman. Lillian was a daughter of the first Jewish family to settle in Ottawa, the Bilskys. Above, Morah Ruthie shows the display to the students in grade 3.

Lag Ba'Omer BBQ
Sports Day may have gotten postponed until Tuesday due to rain, but the BBQ went ahead as planned on Monday. Fortunately, it stopped raining by the time the dads who volunteered to cook all those hamburgers and hot dogs fired up the grill.
Grade 8 wants to thank Sam Freedman and the dads for their help, as well as Loblaws and Creative Kosher Catering for donating the supplies. Over $1400 was raised in memory of Hillel parent Joy Ostrega, and will go towards a charity of their choosing.

In honour of their efforts towards JET's (Jewish Education through Torah) goal of clocking in 18,000 hours of Jewish learning this year, the students in grades 6, 7 and 8 met comedian Marc Weiner, in for Jewish Unity Live. Marc's current claim to fame is being the voice of Map and Swiper on Dora the Explorer. (You'd be amazed at how impressed 11, 12 and 13-year-olds could be by this.) JET also presented a computer to the lucky winner of a raffle - Meredith in grade 7.

The grade 8s visited Hillel Lodge this week. Above, Sabrina, Noam, Elana, Allec, Daniel and Isaac help the residents bake cookies (which they then helped to eat).

Looking for ...
- Morah Ruthie is looking for several items to create a small sitting area in our front foyer. She would love the donation of a bench or any other furniture to make the area comfortable. Also appreciated would be coffee tables that the students would be able to decorate with a mosaic. Please contact Morah Ruthie if you can be of any help.
- Mrs. Mackintosh in the library is looking for donations of updated, children's audio visual
material. She would like English, French
and Hebrew books with tapes/CDs and children's DVDs both fiction and
non-fiction.
