From the Administration Our students learned an important lesson this week, thanks to Rideau Bakery and several dedicated volunteers. Not only does being involved in tikkun olam make you feel good for helping others, but it can also be fun to do. Our 6th grade students spent a great day at the Rideau Bakery decorating many cupcakes. We want to give a heartfelt thank you to Rideau Bakery for donating not only the cupcakes and the space and time to decorate them, but also providing the students with lunch beforehand. We know that having institutions such as the Rideau Bakery providing such positive examples of the spirit of tikkun olum reinforces the lessons we are all trying to teach our students.
The lesson was passed on to the rest of the student body the next day, as the 6th grade class sold their creations at recess. They were a big hit!
We'd like to thank those of you who responded to our request for
feedback on your uniform experience this year. We have passed your
concerns on to Top Marks. The virtually universal request was for an
option for a coloured shirt, and so we will be adding a coloured polo shirt to
the uniform options. You can see a sample of it at the fittings, which will be after school on Monday and Tuesday.
Shabbat Shalom,

Lag Ba'Omer Information
Hillel Academy traditionally celebrates
Lag Ba'Omer with a Sports day, and this year we are having the BBQ as well (for those still bringing lunch, remember this Monday will be a meat day). The students have all been split into 1
of 4 inter-grade groups. They will be expected to dress in the colour of
their group for Monday. The students will be told what colour they are
to wear, but if they aren't certain, you can download the list of the
teams from the website.
The ADKs will be having their own
special fun along side the rest of the school. Under the supervision of their teachers, they will be doing
their own set of relay races. They will also be divided into teams. To
see the ADK teams and the colours they need to dress in, you can also check the website. |
Uniform Information
Top Marks will be back at the school at the beginning of next week for uniform fittings. They will be here on Monday,
May 3rd, 4:00pm - 7:00pm for family names that

4th, 4:00pm - 7:00pm for family names

The Scientists Come Back to School
Several grades got a visit from Scientists in School this week. In grade 5, they learned more about Structures and Mechanisms. They got to be structural engineers, with teams of students all racing to build a structure from limited newspaper and tape that would hold up textbooks. Scientist Catherine then tested them. All of the structures held between 0 and 3 books, with one very notable
exception. Dani, Dahlia, Haley and Belinda proved themselves to be
expert structural engineers, building a structure that held 36 books
before collapsing! (Below, the class gathers around to watch in delight as Scientist
Catherine keeps piling the books onto their structure.)

In grade 2, the students learned about the properties of air and water, even using them to move heavy objects. (Right, Rebekah pours water onto a scale to discover its weight.) In grade 3, the students learned about the properties of matter and energy, discovering the impact of different types of forces - friction, gravity, magnetic and electrostatic force. (Below, Dalia's dad works with Stefanie, Ben and Jessica to figure out how to build a domino bridge across a 'river'.) |
Tasty Tikkun Olam
Grade 6 had fun this week for a good cause. They spent part of Wednesday at Rideau Bakery, where they were first treated to pizza and cake for lunch before decorating a lot of cupcakes. The volunteer moms who went along to help wanted a special thank you to go out to the staff at Rideau Bakery, for being welcoming and helpful beyond all expectations. The students had a great time and learned how to decorate the beautiful cupcakes. Right, Olivia and Ben concentrate hard as they decorate. Below, Rideau Bakery employee Jackie decorates with Samara, Jordan, Noah and Marlin.
|
After decorating hundreds of cupcakes, the grade 6 students got to bring them to Hillel and sell them to the other students at recess on Thursday. Their efforts have so far raised over $500 for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Left, Rachel shows off the finished product. Below, Elana, Mirren and Lauren enjoy their cupcakes.
|
Left, Daniella reached 100 books a while ago, but then she went to visit Israel and we missed taking her photo, so she is here with Kole, who has now also read 100 books. Right, Kolten is the winner of the Principal's Award this week!

Looking for ...
- Morah Ruthie is looking for several items to create a small sitting area in our front foyer. She would love the donation of a bench or any other furniture to make the area comfortable. Also appreciated would be coffee tables that the students would be able to decorate with a mosaic. Please contact Morah Ruthie if you can be of any help.
