From the Administration Everybody celebrated Yom Ha'Aztmaut this week, both here and in Israel. While the students at Hillel took the opportunity to learn more about Israel, 19 of our grade 8 students and their teachers were learning about Israel first hand. They were lucky enough to experience Yom Ha'Zikaron and Yom Ha'Atzmaut with their host families in northern Israel while the rest of Hillel celebrated here. Our weary travelers have since returned home, in a trip that was made somewhat longer by the volcano in Iceland, but at least not delayed. They have been full of stories of their experiences in Israel, and the new friends they made in the north.
We also celebrated Earth Day on Thursday, wrapping up a month of activities learning about the environment and sustainability, and what differences we can make. From reading 100 books, to decorating each classroom door with an environmental theme, to working to reduce the litter produced in our school, the students have been very busily raising awareness of environmental causes this month and we are sure they will continue to carry much of that awareness on past this month.
It's hard to believe we are already looking towards all the events May will bring. Please get your forms in for our Lag Ba'Omer BBQ, and take a moment to think of those in need and contribute to our Kosher Food drive. There is a box in the front hall for donations.
Shabbat Shalom,

Yom Ha'Atzmaut Celebrations
Tuesday was filled with Yom Ha'Atzmaut activities.
In the morning, grade 4 students were the MCs as each grade contributed to an assembly in celebration of Israel's birthday, as well as hearing greetings from Amit Bayaz, Deputy Head of Mission (and Hillel Mom) and Lt.Col. Avi Eliyahyu, Assistant to the Defense Attache in Washington D.C. (right)
They then moved over to the SJCC for a flag-raising ceremony. The weather cooperated perfectly and after the flag-raising, the students all enjoyed a picnic in front of the school, with falafel and soup for all, provided by the PTA.
Some time ago, each grade was given a section of a large puzzle of Israel, and have spent the intervening time learning all about their section. In the afternoon, each grade presented what they had learned using music, powerpoint, and videos, and filled in their piece of the puzzle.

Hillel is Green!
Thursday was Earth Day. The students all had fun decorating their classroom doors for the event and getting to dress in green and blue.
The upper grade students (4-8) learned about how the environment is a Jewish cause from lawyer and rabbinical student, Dara Lithwick. Ms. Lithwick pointed out to the students that while Earth Day on April 22 is 40 years old, Jewish Earth Day (otherwise known as Tu Bishvat) has been around for thousands of years.
The 5th grade students also heard from Sasha Kebo, from Pollution Probe, who taught them what a watershed is and about conservation and other environmental issues surrounding watersheds.

Recycled Art
The grade 3 and 4 classes had fun on Wednesday working on their Tikkun Olam project, creating art from recycled objects. The grade 3 classroom was a scene of organized chaos as the students broke up into smaller groups and created their Recycled Family: Mom, Dad, Sister, Brother, the Baby and the Dog. The students collected the materials themselves.
Left, the big brother stands among the leftover junk used in his creation. Below, Morah Ricky works with Jessica and Jamie on the sister. You can see the family for yourself on display in the front hall.

The students in ADK reached 100 books read last week. Their timing was perfect. For every classroom that read 100 books by Earth Day, Scholastic Canada promised to make a donation towards protecting Canada's boreal forest. Not only did the students get to read lots of books, but they got to learn what a boreal forest is.

Little Ray's Reptile Zoo came to Hillel today in the first of its club meetings. The students got to learn about and hold a variety of creepy crawlies, such as a scorpion, cockroach, cave spider, mealworm and a tarantula. The Little Ray's representative pointed out that mealworms are edible and offered to let any child who was interested eat one. Fortunately, they all declined because mealworms aren't kosher! Above, Rom holds Chilli the Chilean tarantula.
