From the Administration Our last week of school before the Passover break is going to be a busy one. Our students will be having their model seders where they will practice everything they have learned in preparation for the real thing.
Our gymnasium, as you will see below, has been transformed into an auditorium in preparation for Yitzhak Rabin High School's play Brighton Beach Memoirs. This is our second year with a play in the Cappies (which you can learn more about here). Several Hillel graduates are starring in the production, as well as two of our grade 8 students, Cassandra and Mirren. Students in grades 7 and 8 are going to be fortunate enough to attend the dress rehearsal on Monday afternoon, but everyone will have to get tickets to see the play, which runs from Monday, March 22 to Thursday, March 25. We are very proud and impressed at the level of talent in this play and hope you get a chance to see it.
On an administrative note, the report cards are being sent out by email today, so check your inboxes for those. And please take a moment to fill out and return your reregistration forms. Staffing and budgeting for the coming year is a huge job, and knowing our enrollment numbers really helps.
Enjoy the great weather and Shabbat Shalom,

Some Important Notes
Please take note of the following:-
Please take note that there are no hot lunches next week.
The lunches resume the first full week we return, the week of April 12.
- We have been alerted that there is an error in one of the Passover recipes in the Hillel Cookbook, just in time for Passover. Liz Sorok's Gefilte
Fish Mold on page 8 has a missing ingredient - 4 eggs. We hope this saves some possible frustration.
- Earth Hour is the largest environmental event
worldwide. Schools, houses and businesses across the world shut off their
lights and do not use electricity for one hour on March 27th. Since that is a
Saturday, Hillel is participating in its own version of Earth Hour the day
before, on Friday, March 26th. During period 8, students and staff will not be
using electricity. This means no overheads, computers, electric pencil
sharpeners or lights!
-
The Green Idea contest is taking place from March
18-26th. Students from K-8 are encouraged to submit their ideas for how they
can help the environment. There will be a draw on March 26th from all the entries
for prizes. (TBA, but they'll be great!) The Environmental Club will be helping to bring the submitted
ideas alive at Hillel. Encourage your kids to help make Hillel green and submit their ideas to the box outside the office.
- The Silver Birch Club is holding a raffle next week for a really great entertainment prize package. It contains gift certificates for Chapters and Blockbuster, hot chocolate, chocolate and munchies, puzzles, etc. Tickets will be on sale next week - one for $2 or 5 for $5.

Bingo and Bagels Hillel Academy PTA's first annual Bingo and Bagels Night will be on Thursday, April 29. Save the date!
A great evening of family fun in the school gym, all immediate and extended family are invited to join. There will be bingo games, raffles and 50/50 draws. Affordable individual and family packages will be available (which include bingo cards, markers, soup and bagels). The event will be from 6 pm to about 8 pm.
The success of this first annual Bingo and Bagels event is dependent upon parent volunteers. They are asking for help in the following areas: decoration, ticket design and sales, set up, prize collection, sponsorship coordination, food and drink, raffle and advertising. The funds raised will go towards the renovation of our kitchen for our incredibly successful hot lunch program.
We look forward to an exciting evening where family and friends gather for an evening of laughter and joy. We look forward to hearing from you. Please contact either PTA co-chair for more information or to offer help - Jennifer Glassman and Marie Levine.

Blues in the School
The second week with Blues in the School focused on the students in grade 4, who learned more about the culture of the blues, tap dancing, as well as several songs that they then performed for their parents in a concert last Friday.
Right, Ethan and Michael play their guitars. Bottom, the kids sing with T.J. Wheeler and James Cohen. Mr. Cohen, who happens to be a Jewish blues man, said he loved working with the students at Hillel, complimenting them as well-behaved and eager to learn. It is nice to know he had as much fun with our students as they clearly had with him!

Science, Science and More Science
|
Science fun filled the school these past two weeks. As
you surely know by now, the Scientists in School program provides intensive,
hands-on learning. But the program isn't the only time students are able to get
down and dirty with science. This week, the students in 3rd grade
got a special delivery of owl pellets - the balls of undigested fur and bones
that owls regurgitate after a meal. They were able to dissect the pellets and
identify what type of bones they discovered. The students were so enthusiastic,
you'd have thought they were treasure hunting! Above, Jessica and Samantha search for bones.
Below, Rachel, David, Molly and Sadie's mom make an electrical connection with the Scientist to light up a bulb, as grade 1 learns about Energy.
|
The 4th grade students learned about how pulleys and gears work on applied force. The highlight of the session was learning that pulleys can make it possible for a 9-year-old to pull an adult on a sled across the room. Each student loved getting to try with and without the help of a pulley. Right, Jessica pulls Ms. Coghlin.
The ADK students got to learn about simple machines. Below, Lucy's dad works with Zev, Jasper, ? and ? to figure out the effect of inclines, weight and shape on how fast and far an object rolls.

Making Matzah

|
The students in grade 1 learn how to make their own matzah. It turns out that even 6-year-olds can make it in 18 minutes! Above, the students poke holes in their matzah to prevent air bubbles. Below, Boris tries to show Ashley the correct rolling pin technique.
Rabbi Blum was very impressed by their level of knowledge about matzah and pesach,
and the students were impressed that they were able to bring home matzah they
made themselves.

The 8th grade students led the Rosh Chodesh service this Tuesday.
|
Music Music teacher Shannon Smith has been working with the students in classes ADK, grades 3 and 5 this term. This week, she was teaching about timing, tempo and harmony. Left, Daniel and Gil share an instrument. Bottom, Shannon plays with Odelia and Michael.
|
Grade 3 has fun presenting a French song they learned to the kindergarten students.

Passover at Loblaws Our Loblaws cards fundraiser has so far proven to have been a huge success, so we just ordered a new batch in, just in time for Passover! You can make your Passover shopping at Loblaws' kosher section easier and help out your school at the same time. They are available in $100 and $250 cards and you just need to find Pearl Beausoleil or Tal Gilboa to make your purchase. (photo: Howard Sandler)

Awards Michael, left, and Aaron, Simon and Mia (below) all won Principal's awards this week. Jessica, left, is grade 3's Student of the week.
And while holding his award certificate upside down is the kind of thing Aaron likes to do, the editor (me) thinks it is kind of sad that the photographer (also me) did not notice that it was upside down while taking the picture.

Hillel's students raised money for Israeli soldiers during Purim, and sent along this 'thank you' message as well.

Brighton Beach Memoirs Hillel Academy's gym (below) is being transformed this week into an auditorium for Yitzhak Rabin High School's cappies play, Bright Beach Memoirs. The play stars several graduates of Hillel, as well as two current grade 8 students, Cassandra and Mirren. The 7th and 8th grade classes will be lucky enough to see the dress rehearsal on Monday afternoon, but everyone else needs to buy tickets. They can be obtained at the Hillel office.
Right, cast member Zach pitches in to unload sections of the set.
