From the Administration Spring is in the air! Not only are our students running around outside in sweaters, but we are already well into planning for the next school year. To help us with budgeting and schedule planning, please get your re-registration forms back to us next week.
We are involved in two great events coming up next week - one for the little kids and one for the big ones. The high school, Yitzhak Rabin, has been working all year on a production of Brighton Beach Memoirs. Not only are several Hillel graduates starring in the production, but two of our grade 8 students are also in the cast. The play starts in a week and a half (see the poster at the bottom of this newsletter for details) and we can't wait! It is a marvelous production, very funny and well-acted. So if you are looking for an evening of relaxation before Passover, this is the place to be.
Brighton Beach Memoirs is definitely not for little kids, but Jewish Education Rocks is! All the Jewish schools in the city have collaborated on this event, Sunday morning at the SJCC. It is our hope to reach out to the unaffiliated families in Ottawa and show them all the options they have for Jewish education - one-stop shopping, but no pressure. There will be a concert by a great kids' performer, Shirlala, plus activities and fun. And it's all free! So if you have any children ages 2-6, please come. And if you know of anyone else who is curious about the Jewish education options, bring them along. JER will make a donation to the food bank on behalf of your child and your friend. Hope to see you there!
Enjoy the great weather and Shabbat Shalom,

Some Important Notes
Please take note of the following:- Tuesday, March 16, at 9 am, we will be holding a Family Rosh Chodesh service, led by the 7th (?) and 8th grade students. Parents and and grandparents from any grade are welcome to join us. A light breakfast will be served following the service.
- The PTA hot lunch calendar is up on the website for April. The deadline is Thursday, March 18th.
- Jewish Education Rocks presents a free Shirlala concert and day of fun for kids 2-6 (siblings welcome!), Sunday, March 14 at the SJCC. The activities start at 9:30 am and the concert starts at 11 am. More information here.
- the SJCC is holding a Passover Camp on Monday, March 29, PCP3001 (no aftercare) and Thursday, April 1, PCP3002 (including aftercare). The camp is for grades K to 6. $35M/$50NM, with a sibling discount. Registration deadline Thursday, March 25.
- We have been alerted that there is an error in one of the Passover recipes in the Hillel Cookbook, just in time for Passover. Liz Sorok's Gefilte
Fish Mold on page 8 has a missing ingredient - 4 eggs. We hope this saves some possible frustration.

Bingo and Bagels Hillel Academy PTA's first annual Bingo and Bagels Night will be on Thursday, April 29. Save the date!
A great evening of family fun in the school gym, all immediate and extended family are invited to join. There will be bingo games, raffles and 50/50 draws. Affordable individual and family packages will be available (which include bingo cards, markers, soup and bagels). The event will be from 6 pm to about 8 pm.
The success of this first annual Bingo and Bagels event is dependent upon parent volunteers. They are asking for help in the following areas: decoration, ticket design and sales, set up, prize collection, sponsorship coordination, food and drink, raffle and advertising. The funds raised will go towards the renovation of our kitchen for our incredibly successful hot lunch program.
We look forward to an exciting evening where family and friends gather for an evening of laughter and joy. We look forward to hearing from you. Please contact either PTA co-chair for more information or to offer help - Jennifer Glassman and Marie Levine.

CanWest Spelling Bee
Once again, Hillel Academy sent school spelling champion Jared Roth on to the Regional Spelling Bee, to compete against 59 other school champs. Just making it that far is a significant achievement, as not all school winners automatically advance to the Regionals. Once Jared won the school bee, he had to write an exam along with hundreds of other local hopefuls. Only the top 60 actually made in front of the judges.
In front of an enthusiastic group of friends and family, Jared achieved his goal of improving on last year's 3rd round finish. He made it to the 5th round this time.

Ski and Sports Day
While the upper grade students had a great time skiing in the wonderful weather on Tuesday, the students in the younger grades enjoyed all sorts of different activities right here at Hillel. Those in grades 3 and 4 spread out among the classes and were of great help to the teachers in making sure everything ran smoothly. Above, the ADK students have fun playing games with a parachute.
|
Above, grade 3 students Alex and Noah play a skipping game with the grade 1 students. Below, Yoah from 3rd grade and Arielle from 4th help Sandra with a craft in the kindergarten classroom.

Evan, Justin, Rebekah, Sabrina and Kayla are our character award winners for this week, all in grade 2.

Passover at Loblaws Our Loblaws cards fundraiser has so far proven to have been a huge success, so we just ordered a new batch in, just in time for Passover! You can make your Passover shopping at Loblaws' kosher section easier and help out your school at the same time. They are available in $100 and $250 cards and you just need to find Pearl Beausoleil or Tal Gilboa to make your purchase. (photo: Howard Sandler)

Silver Birch Used Book Sale Students from the Silver Birch program (grades 3-6), are holding a fundraiser next week for their end-of-year field trip. From Monday to Thursday, they will be selling gently-used books and magazines. All books for sale will be .50 each.
