From the Administration
It just never stops around here! This week saw the Science Fair, Scholastic Book Fair, our Open House, the Mathletes contest and, of course, Purim. Kudos to our marvelous grade 8 students, who presented a very funny and engaging Purim show for the rest of the school - particularly Dayna who, as the Cat in the Hat, told the whole megillah in Dr. Seuss rhyme. It was a big hit.

Also a big hit were the mishloach manot treats the students all received. Morah Ruthie wants to extend a huge thank you to the parents who volunteered to put them all together.

Thanks should go to the parents who volunteered to help out at our annual Scholastic Book Fair. Because of  them, Noah's class in grade 2 and Hayley's class in grade 5 won books, and we also received new books for our library.

We know we say this a lot, but we are very proud of our students this week. On Wednesday, the school was filled with science! Grades 4 - 8 were in the gym, but not being in the official Science Fair did not deter the younger grades. Their classrooms were filled with projects to show their parents. It was a wonderful sight.

Shabbat Shalom, and Happy Purim,

Important Notes
  • Morah Tal Gilboa, who took our Resource Department from a single staff person to 3 full-time and 2 part-time teachers meeting all the varied needs of our students, is moving to Montreal at the end of the school year. We wish her all the best with her new husband and home and will miss her greatly.
  • We are happy to announce that Keren Gordon, our grade 2 teacher, will be taking over the Resource Department next year, so Morah Tal can know it is in good hands.
  • Yitzhak Rabin's play Brighton Beach Memoirs will be from March 22 - 25.
  • The PTA Hot Lunch calendar is up on the front of the website for April.
  • The Grade 1 Siddur Party is on Wednesday, March 3 at 9:15am.
Science Fair
The Science Fair was a huge success this year. Students from grades 4 - 8 set their projects up in the library, and those in grades 7 and 8 were judged by a panel of 19 guest judges, such as the head of Ottawa Public Health, Dr. Isra Levy, pictured below left.

The winners in grade 8 were as follows: Jared and Eadan - gold, Mirren and Danielle - silver, GG and Sebi - bronze. In grade 7 it was: Noah and Ethan - gold, Meredith and Abigail - silver, Jacob and Matthew - bronze. All the winners are depicted below.

The judges reported that the judging was difficult, due to the enormous variety of the projects and the depth of knowledge the students displayed. For a list of the winning topics and the judges, you can go to our website.

Jewish Education Rocks!
Hillel Academy has joined with the other Jewish schools in Ottawa, both day and after-school, to present a unique event called, "Jewish Education Rocks," at the SJCC on Sunday, March 14, from 9:30am - 1pm. The day involves a free concert from the "outrageously hip" New York kidder rocker Shirlala, plus a chance for the kids to have fun while their parents learn about the many options for Jewish education in Ottawa.
Shirlala
This event is primarly for children 2 - 6 years old (plus siblings), so if you know of any families with young children, please pass the message on. There will be a sing-a-long with Rabbi Shotkin (back in town especially for this event!), arts and crafts, face-painting and cookie decorating, plus story-telling by our very own Morah Ann-Lynn.

Canadian National Math League Contest

On Thursday, February 25, Extended Math students, as well as other students who wished to participate, wrote the Canadian Math League contest. This is an international contest, in many countries around the world. The Canadian version is administered through the University of Windsor Mathematics Department. The questions for each grade are challenging. They range from interesting to diabolical in difficulty. Look forward to the results in next week's Hadashot. Below, Michael, Jordan, Rachel, Joseph and Rachel write the test.

Help Your School - For Free!
loblaws Yes, we are not above using adorable children to get your attention! Meghan and Zack are holding up our Loblaws money cards that they want you to buy! If you do, you get cards with the equivalent to what you paid (so the cost to you is nothing) but Loblaws gives us a percentage. We'll spend it on new gym equipment for Meghan and Zack, and all the other students, to play with. Just take a moment to grab Pearl Beausoleil or Tal Gilboa to get your cards. Please remember us for your Pesach shopping - easy for you, great for us.

Purim Fun!!

Purim Ganon

A group of grade 8 students went over to Ganon Preschool to help with their Carnival. Above, Shira plays a game with Buzz Lightyear.

Purim teachers

Hillel's teachers were great sports for Purim. Above, a Bavarian bar maid, a blushing bride and a Jewish angel (Mr. Cinanni, Morah Yaffa and Mrs. Waxman).

Kolten Purim
Kolten, above, and GG, below, demonstrate what great sports they are! Kolten is being pelted by wet sponges and GG is getting whip creamed. A number of teachers and senior school teachers sacrificed themselves to the cause of fun at Hillel's Purim carnival. (For more photos of Purim and the rest of the week, check our photo gallery on Monday.)
GG Purim
momsJosh and Adam's's mom, Talia's mom, Morah Ruthie and Ben's mom put together mishloach manot for the students. This year everyone received the same pre-made package of kosher, nut-free treats.
