From the Administration
Another busy week! We had fun on Thursday afternoon with the CanWest Spelling Bee for our younger grades. We were amazed to have over 30 students from grades 1 and 2 join the competition. It was remarkable to see so many little faces in front of the microphone, bravely facing their parents and peers to try out their newly-minted spelling skills. Of course, we could have only one winner, which meant some disappointment and tears for the others. But as they walked away from the front of the gym, they were given spontaneous hugs and congratulations from their classmates - a heartwarming sight for the parents and teachers watching the event. They should all be very proud of their achievements, as we are.

Now that the Spelling Bees are over, the students can turn their attention during recess to Winter clubs. As always, we have old favourites - such as house leagues and dance club - and some new ones for the students to try out. There's something for everyone!

Shabbat Shalom,

signatures

Find Us on Facebookfb
Hillel Academy and YRHS now have their own page on Facebook. The purpose is primarily for parents to have a place to discuss and trade information. Although it is a parent-run page with no official connection to the schools, we will use the status updates to pass on information for those who are interested.

ADK Students Meet Founder   adk at hl3
Last Friday, the ADK students went for their monthly Shabbat program at Hillel Lodge. It turned out that one of the women in the audience was one of Hillel Academy's original founders.

Eileen Goldberg, pictured right with Morah Ann-Lynn and the ADK students, founded Hillel with 12 other sets of parents, and the school opened on September 1, 1949.

For the curious, here are the names of the first students (some of the last names are very familiar!):

Stan Ages, Ronnie Cantor, Carol Saslove, Carol Wexler Segal, Gail Steinman Victor, Franklin Goldstein, Harvey Swedlove, Lenny Koffman, Suzanne Berliner Tepper, Mitzi Arbuck Dickstein, Sheila Lithwick Cohen (z"l), David Zbar (z"l) Howard Goldberg (z"l).

CanWest Spelling Bee - Junior Edition

For the first time, grades 1 and 2 could participate in their own CanWest Spelling Bee. It was very popular, with over 30 students taking their turns at the microphone. Upper grade students Kolten, Ander, Shoshana, Opal and Noa were the guest judges.

After over an hour, it came down to 3, pictured below - Aliza (at the mic), Evan and David. Aliza got third place and should be very proud of herself for being the last 1st grader standing. Evan finally slipped up on a word, making David our first Junior CanWest Spelling Bee champion. As he cheered, their classmates rushed both David and Evan to congratulate them on a job well done.

We are very proud of all the students who participated. They showed great dedication, spending many recesses working hard on learning their words, and successfully spelled words on lists as high as grade 8.

Help Your School - For Free!
loblaws Yes, we are not above using adorable children to get your attention! Meghan and Zack are holding up our Loblaws money cards that they want you to buy! If you do, you get cards with the equivalent to what you paid (so the cost to you is nothing) but Loblaws gives us a percentage. We'll spend it on new gym equipment for Meghan and Zack, and all the other students, to play with. Just take a moment to grab Pearl Beausoleil or Tal Gilboa to get your cards.

Super Heroes Come to Hillel
ex fr1

The students in 5th grade Extended French had fun this week presenting skits in which they had to create their own superheroes and villains. Above, Justin narrates while Dr. Max operates on Maya. Superhero Haley waits in the wings.

ADK Meets an Olympian

All the students in Hillel have been learning about the Winter Olympics and the countries and sports involved. On Tuesday, the kindergarten students were extra lucky to get to meet a real live Olympian. Don Jackson, pictured below, won a bronze medal at the Winter Olympics of 1960.

He couldn't show them footage from that because, as he told the confused 5-year-olds, there was no TV at the Olympics back then. But he did have footage of his gold medal performance at the 1962 World Championships, where he was the first skater to successfully land a triple lutz in competition (the skating fans among you will be impressed). The children were suitably impressed and applauded every jump. If you want to learn more about Mr. Jackson or even watch the same video (about half way down the page), click here.

Math Message from Ms. Myhill

Here is some interesting reading on the way children learn math. You can download the article from our Math Resources section of our website. The article is from the The Ontario LNS (Literacy Numeracy Secretariat), which is useful for both teachers and parents who may still believe that teaching and learning math is about acquiring a set of facts, skills and procedures.  Our teaching of math is changing to problem-based learning to reflect this research. We need your support. Rest assured, we still value and encourage students to learn their basic facts, but we want to ensure that they understand why a procedure works.
We Are Looking For ...
Old Ceramics
Morah Ruthie is still looking for more old colourful glass, ceramics, plates, cups, tiles, etc. to create a mosaic. Please drop anything you have off in the box by the entrance of the school.

Parents Who Want the Lunch Program to Continue
The PTA needs some more parent volunteers to keep the hot lunch program going. All that is required is 1 hour a month to help. It can be before, during or after lunch, or even after school. Please contact the PTA co-chairs if you are interested - Marie Levine or Jennifer Glassman.

Book-loving Parents
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming up in February and the PTA also needs parents with an hour or two to spare for this important fundraiser. If you have a little time to help, please contact Rena Kimea.
