From the Administration Once again, we've had a week completely filled with activities. Big kids have been entertaining and educating little kids and everyone has been having a great time with Spirit Week.
We've also had Scientists in School into 3 different grades this week. ADK, grade 3, grade 7 and grade 8 were the lucky classes this time. We feel very fortunate to be able to bring this marvelous science-enrichment program into our school twice for each grade. They provide interactive, hands-on science education and the students always love when it is their grade's turn.
One important element that allows us to bring something as wonderful as Scientists in School into Hillel is our volunteer parents. In the younger grades, the program requires having the students placed into small groups, something we could not manage without the exra help. So this is a big thank you to all the parents who came to Hillel this week to help.
Volunteers are the backbone of many programs we provide in our school. We want to encourage you to take a quick look at our "Looking for" section down below and see the wide variety of volunteers we need. There's something for every interest! Nothing requires a huge commitment, but a few more hours from a few more people will make a huge difference to these events and programs. We've said it before, but it really is true - we can't do it without you.
Shabbat Shalom,
- Donna Palmer-Dodds and Wendy Waxman

Important Notes
- The PTA meeting has been postponed a week to Sunday, February 7. It is at co-chair Marie Levine's house (2303 Fox Cres.) at 7 pm. Everyone is welcome! Please RSVP to Marie.
- The SJCC has scholarship funding for immigrant children (children under 18 years who immigrated within the last 10 years) to take after-school enrichment programs, as well as life-guard training. Anyone interested in more information can email Maxine Miska or call her at 798-9818, ext 263.

Find Us on Facebook Hillel Academy and YRHS now have their own page on Facebook. The purpose is primarily for parents to have a place to discuss and trade information. Although it is a parent-run page with no official connection to the schools, we will use the status updates to pass on information for those who are interested.

Spirit Week Fun The students (and teachers!) had a great time this week dressing up for different theme days. On Monday, they dressed up as hero or idol (ranging from Batman to Charles Darwin to Mr. Morenstein - Joshua, right, is one of the 3 musketeers for the day, complete with a cool purple feather.) Below, Mr. Lamb poses with his 'twins' for Twin Day - Rotem, Mikah, Diana, Bailey.
See below and the photo gallery for more pictures.

Scientists in Kindergarten
The Scientist who came to visit ADK this week introduced the
students to several different types of science. As astronomers, they climbed
into a dark tent to see constellations, became paleontologists and dug in sand
to uncover 'dinosaur bones,' created solutions like chemists and learned about
meteorologists and weather.
(Right, Romie, experiments with wind. Below, ? and ? dig for fossils.)

Scientists in Grade Three
Students from grade 3 got to be structural engineers on Thursday, as they learned about stability and how to build strong bridges. Above, Jessica helps Yoav get his ruler to stay standing. Below, the class cheers as the Big Bad Wolf (Morah Yaffa in a hated Maple Leafs shirt) fails to blow down their straw structure. The students also got to build bridges from newspapers. Their goal was to have them strong enough to hold up 5 textbooks. They all succeeded! For more photos, see our photo gallery.

Scientists in Grade Seven
The 7th grade students all became chemists for half
a day as the Scientists in School program taught them about solutions. They
learned about pure substances and mixtures, and got to mix and match solutes
and solvents. Above, Eric and Ethan create their solutions.

|
Scientists in Grade Eight
The 8th grade students learned more about cells from their Scientist. Above Caleb (dressed as his hero, Barack Obama) and Jacob learn to stain their slide before viewing it under the microscope.

CanWest Spelling Bee at Hillel
On Wednesday, Hillel held the school-wide CanWest Spelling
Bee. Students from grades 4 to 8 participated. Last year's champion, Jared
Roth, was back and won again, as most people expected. But everyone was
delighted with the number of students who worked hard over the past months to
compete. Jared is in grade 8 this year, so the field is wide open next year.
Ander, from grade 4, made sure the spelling bee had an exciting finish, going at least 15
rounds with Jared before the end.

This week, two Hebrew Language Fluency groups put on plays
for their classes. The plays were
entirely the students' work; they wrote and acted out them out. On Tuesday, grade 3 students Yoav, Oren, Jonathan, and Harel
presented Goldilocks and the
Three Bears. On Friday, Rotem and Ander from grade 4 (above right, and behind the bench) and Justin (above left) from grade 5 presented
Hansel and Gretel.

Flat Stanley Visits Hillel Flat Stanley came from Massachusetts to visit Bennett (left). Bennett's cousin sent him to spend some time with Bennett's family (appropriately dressed for cold winter weather!). At school, they drew pictures of Flat Stanley skating on the Rideau Canal and including him in circle time and play.

D'var Torah
During the Exodus, the people of Israel find
a bitter water source called Marah. Despite the miracles they witnessed, they
complain that they have no water to drink. Moshe prays to G-d, who indicates
there is a stick of wood Moshe should use to sweeten the waters. Moshe then
takes the wood, throws it into the water, and the water is sweetened.
It is not only intriguing that Moshe is
able to use a piece of wood to sweeten the bitter water, but that the text
indicates that G-d 'teaches' Moshe about the wood, rather than simply showing
it to him.
In rabbinic literature, wood is symbolic of
Torah, such as in the expression of Etz Chaim (tree of life). The Torah is the
source of life for the Jewish people, much as water is the support of
biological life. Sometimes, people perceive the Torah as something bitter,
considering its many prohibitions and restrictions. It is therefore the
responsibility of the teacher to sweeten the Torah and demonstrate its true
beauty.
Our students must learn about the sweetness
of Torah. As the rabbis tell us in Tractate Kiddushin, it must be presented as
a 'sam chaim', an 'elixir of life', inspiring our students to pursue a life
imbued with Torah values. To do otherwise would be a disservice to Torah, to its
students and, by extension, the Jewish people.

We Are Looking For
... Old Ceramics Morah Ruthie is looking for old colourful glass, ceramics, plates, cups, tiles, etc. to create a mosaic. Please drop anything you have off in the box by the entrance of the school.
Dedicated Parents We are also looking for dedicated parents to join a group created to help promote recruitment and retention for our school. If you think you can help, please contact us.
Parents Who Want the Lunch Program to Continue The PTA needs some more parent volunteers to keep the hot lunch program going. All that is required is 1 hour a month to help. It can be before, during or after lunch, or even after school. Please contact the PTA co-chairs if you are interested - Marie Levine or Jennifer Glassman.
Green Parents
As we mentioned last week,
Ms. Coghlin and her Environmental Club applied for and received 2 grants to
help make our school greener. They are now hoping to find a few volunteers to
help them with their projects and to come up with more ideas to make our school
a more environmentally-friendly place to be.
Please contact Ms. Coghlin if you are interested.
Book-loving Parents The Scholastic Book Fair is coming up in February and the PTA also needs parents with an hour or two to spare for this important fundraiser. If you have a little time to help, please contact Rena Kimea.
