From the Administration We want to tell you that we are extra proud of our school this week. Our grade 3 class decided they wanted to do something to help the situation in Haiti and took it upon themselves to go to each classroom and ask for donations. They then went back over the next few days and collected over $500 dollars. They will be adding it to the Jewish Federation's fund so what they raised will be matched by the government.
Of course our teachers were talking to their students about Haiti and how Tikkun Olam goes beyond our borders and our community, but the impetus to collect money came from our students themselves, and we are very proud of their efforts.
We are also proud of our Environmental Club. As we've mentioned before, they instituted a recycling program here at the school, but they weren't about to stop there. They have applied for and received two grants from the Metro Green Apple Grant program. Hillel will receive $2000 in total, to create a composting program and bird nesting. (To read more about Green Apple Grants and the bird nesting project, you can go to their website.) We are delighted with their initiative and can't wait to see how the programs develop.
Finally, we urge everyone to take a moment to come and look in our front lobby. As you've seen in the past couple of Hadashots, our teachers and students have been working with Morah Ruthie to create something remarkable. We think this week proved that, on every level, it is amazing to see what we can accomplish when we work together.
Shabbat Shalom,
- Donna Palmer-Dodds and Wendy Waxman

Spring Comes to Hillel In anticipation of Tu B'Shevat, Hillel's teachers and students have turned the front lobby into a beautiful forest. Morah Ruthie came up with the idea, and she got help from students from kindergarten to grade 8 to build it, including several very enthusiastic teachers. Right, kindergarten teacher Morah Ann-Lynn works on the flowers with 3rd grader Stefanie. Below, Morah Yaffa reads with Ben and Alex on the bench in the finished forest. (For more photos of people enjoying the new park right in our own lobby, as well as other photos from the week, go to our photo gallery.)

Fourth Grade Learns about Light, Matter and Energy The Scientists in School program visited the 4th grade this week, teaching the students all about the different properties of light. They learned about reflection, refraction, fibre optics and even about the theory of relativity. They split regular light into rainbows (Jordana right, shines the rainbow on her shirt).
Bottom left, Noah waits for his cameo as Albert Einstein, repeating his lines: "Nothing is faster than the speed of light. Time slows down." Right, Arielle bends light to make a strange face.)

Grade 4 Performs for Grade 1
Grade 4 presented their modern fairy tale Reader's Theatre
plays to the grade 1 on January 13th and 15th. The grade 1s got to
see 'Cinderella Outgrows the Glass Slipper,' 'Reading, Writing, and
Little Red Riding Hood' and 'Two Pigs, A Wolf and a Mud Pie'. Reader's Theatre allows the grade 4 students to focus on developing their reading fluency by
incorporating a lot of expression, allowing students to have their
script on stage and having limited props. All the students - performers and audience - had a lot of fun
doing the plays and did an outstanding job!
(Left, Jamie Jaye and Adam ham it up as the two pigs. Below, Noa (left) and Noah (right) really get into their roles as well.)

Grade 6 has Fun Reading to Grade 3
The 3rd and 6th grades also had a lot of fun this week. The 6th grade students got together in groups, made up a story and then each of them wrote that story from a different character's point of view. They also illustrated their stories. They then presented them to the 3rd grade class. The 6th graders wrote very amusing stories and the 3rd graders clearly loved hearing them. Left, Noah reads his story to both classes.

Hillel Rasies Money For Haitian Relief

Our 3rd grade class is small, but mighty! They decided to raise money for Haitian Earthquake relief and took it upon themselves to visit the other classrooms and ask for donations. Their efforts raised $546.33. They will pass it on to the Jewish Federation, who will make sure the funds are matched by the government before being sent on to relief organizations. Below, the fundraising not only taught the students more about Tikkun Olam, but provided for an impromptu math lesson as well, as the students counted and added up the money they collected. (By the way, there's a new face in the crowd above. Middle row, second from the right, meet Ben, who recently moved from Toronto. Welcome to Hillel, Ben!)

Above, Taylor, Max, Josh and Lea are our award winners this week, all from grade 1. Below, Jonah and Tandia, also in grade 1, have read 100 books each!
