From the Administration

The staff and administration at Hillel Academy would like to extend our most heartfelt condolences to the Ostrega family over the loss of their beloved wife and mother, Joy Ostrega, last weekend. Our thoughts are with them in this difficult time.

May they be comforted amongst the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

Shabbat Shalom,

- Donna Palmer-Dodds and Wendy Waxman

Important Notes
  • Do to increasing traffic volume in the library, the schedule has been somewhat revised to accommodate more students. The changes affect the older grades, and can be found here.
  • Friday, February 12 is a PD day (for both Hillel and the public board), and the SJCC is offering a day program for students. Activities include swimming, sports, crafts, science and more. Space is limited. Cost is $35 for members and $50 for non-members (with a sibling discount). Email or call Gail Lieff at 798-9818, ext 303.
Chanukah Celebration Photos and Video
Howard Sandler, the parent and professional photographer who generously photographed and videotaped our Chanukah Celebration, has already provided us with both the photographs and video from the performance. You can view and download the photos at his site: http://www.pbase.com/hsandler/client3. The password is 'parent101'. We will also provide the photos on CD for a small fee to cover our costs ($2). The video is only available on DVD, for $5. Please contact us by email to make your requests.
Grade 6 Gets a Scientist in the School
Grade 6 started out the year learning about Air and Flight. They learned about  lift, velocity and propeller design. Hair dryers and toy parachutes became learning tools as they experimented with air. Below, Benjamin, Jordan, Rachel and Rachel test their parachutes.

The Best Kind of Fundraiser!
kosher loblawsHillel has now arranged to sell "Loblaws Money" cards in denominations of $100 or $250. The great thing about this is that the cost to you is nothing - $100 gets a $100 card - but we receive 5% of every card sold.

The money Hillel receives from the sale of these cards  will go to the Special Education Department and to buying new equipment for the gym.

You can use the cards at your favourite local kosher department, but they are also good at Great Canadian Superstores, Your Independent Grocers and No Frills. You can buy them with cash or a cheque from Tal Gilboa or Pearl Beausoleil. (photo: Howard Sandler)

Teacher Profile - Janet Darwish100 books2
Better known at school as Morah Yaffa, Janet Darwish has been teaching at Hillel for 26 years. Most of that time was spent in kindergarten, both junior and senior. In the past few years, Janet has branched out into grades 2 and 3. This year, she is teaching grade 3 again, but she has taken on another role that allows her to get back to teaching kindergarteners and first graders again - she is the resource teacher for our new Early Intervention Reading Program.

For half the day, Morah Yaffa teaches General Studies in grade 3. She says the best thing about teaching grade 3 this year is that she taught the same students in grade 2 last year. "They are a great group of kids," she says. "I have the best class in the school. I know there are other teachers who say that, but I really do." Needless to say, Morah Yaffa has a lot of fun with her class, and they can often be seen wandering the halls in search of real-life examples to back up their learning in the classroom.

For the other half of the day, Janet takes small groups of students from grades 1 and 2 out of the classroom to work on their reading (above, Janet plays word games with the students). She is also starting to test the students in ADK for their reading readiness. The idea is to identify very early any children who might have difficulties with some aspect of reading and work more intensely with them on a daily basis. "Working with them every day," explains Janet, "allows me to  reinforce concepts repeatedly. And it is amazing how quickly these kids have responded." Janet says that between the classroom, the work she does with the students and the support they get at home, the students she has been working with have shown improvements beyond her expectations.

Not surprisingly, when she isn't at school, Janet enjoys activities that take a lot of energy, such as skiing every weekend in the winter and mountain biking in the summer. "And reading!" She stresses. "Don't forget reading. I tell all my students that I won't be happy until they love reading as much as I do."

We have our winners!
The PTA has announced the winners in the cookbook selling contest. The students of 4A are the lucky winners of the pizza lunch, and 1L and 5K will each get a cupcake party. Of course, the treats will all be kosher, and the winners will be enjoying their rewards on Friday, January 15th.

Ms. Robinson was very impressed with the efforts her grade 8 English students put into the assignment she gave them - to make a map of the island in Lord of the Flies. Above is one of the creative results she got.

Above, the mother of the bride (Noa), the bride (Lucy), her flower girl (Ma'ayan), and her bridemaids (Mia and Jordan) were ready, but all the potential grooms (below) were too busy, as one of them put it, "building stuff," to attend.

We Are Looking For ...
Volunteers
Morah Ruthie is working on some new and interesting ways to celebrate the holidays with our students. Coming up are Tu Bishvat, Purim and Pesach. If you have an hour or two to help Ruthie with organization, she would love to hear from you. Please contact her to let her know when you can help.

Garden Bench and Small Garden Table
To be used in art projects with Morah Ruthie. Aren't you curious to see what she'll turn them into?

Items from the 1930s
Brighton Beach Memoirs, YRHS's play, is set in the 1930s. We have a lot of what we need new, but we are still looking for a braided oval rug, an old menorah, framed photograghs, an old tablecloth, house dresses and aprons, a small wooden bench, sofa and chair. If you have anything you can lend, please contact Lynda at YRHS.
