Coming Up ...
WINTER BREAK. Enjoy!
|
|
|
From the Administration Our Chanukah celebration was everything we could have hoped for. Everyone rose to the challenge: our in-house chef, the parent volunteers who baked 700 cookies, parent and artist Iris Arnon who designed the program cover, our grade 8 students who worked behind the scenes decorating cookies, handing out programs and helping with organization, to our student performers themselves. It was so exciting to come together as one school and showcase the talent our students have - as well as have a lot of fun!
We want to give a big thank you to our parents and grandparents who came out to show their support to our children and our school. We also need to give a very big thank you to all our teachers. They showed enormous cooperation and flexibility. They helped with all our beautiful artwork and teaching the students their songs, as well as keeping them organized on Wednesday evening. We hope the parents realize what dedicated teachers we have. They do so much more than teach your children. They run extra-curricular clubs and sports and pulled together to make our Chanukah celebration a huge success. Thank you.
Have a wonderful winter break, and we will see you in the New Year!

Chanukah Around the World Hillel had its first all-grade Chanukah celebration on Wednesday evening. Six families - the Freedmans, Dersos, Livshits, Ostrosckis, Barays and Glassmans - representing different countries, lit the candles before the show. Soloists Elizabeth, Haley, Dani (all from grade 5), Mirren, Lauren and Jonathan (all from grade 8) performed, as well as the Hillel Choir (pictured below). Isaac (grade 3), Elisheva (grade 5) and Abigail (grade 7) were our MCs. Fifth grade students presented a play telling the story of Chanukah, which encompassed songs from around the world performed by each grade. The 7th grade students sang a song they wrote themselves, using the tune to "If I had a Million Dollars." Hillel parent Howard Sandler took photos and a video, which will be made available after the new year, but he gave us these pictures for the Hadashot. (Right, Philip peforms his solo. Bottom, Isaac lights the 6th candle for the Glassman family before the play begins.)

The Best Kind of Fundraiser! Hillel has arranged to sell "Loblaws Money" cards in denominations of $100 or $250. The cost to you is nothing, but we receive 5% of every card sold. The money we receive will go to the Special Education Department and to buying new equipment for the gym. The cards are in, and you can buy them with cash or a cheque from Tal Gilboa or Pearl Beausoleil. This is an ongoing fundraiser, so you will be able to get them when school returns in January.

Meet
Our Great Library Volunteers
Teacher Librarian Mrs. Mackintosh nominated her Library Squad for a P.R.O. (People Respecting Others) Award
this week. Responsibility is one of the character traits being emphasized this
month, and the Squad certainly demonstrates that. Every week they help
organize, label, and shelve materials and cheerfully locate requested books.
Mrs. Mackintosh wants to thank them for all their hard work in making our
library such a great place to read, study and play. Below, back row: Max, Josh, Joseph,
Victoria, Hannah. Middle row: Noya and Rachel. (Absent - Ben.) Front: Yael from grade 2, who also won the award this week.

We Are Looking For
...
Snowsuit Fund Thank you to everyone who donated winter clothing! We delivered about 12 huge garbage bags to the Snowsuit Fund this week.
Items from the 1930s Brighton Beach Memoirs, YRHS's play, is set in the 1930s. We have a lot of what we need new, but we are still looking for a braided oval rug, an old menorah, framed photograghs, an old tablecloth, house dresses and aprons, a small wooden bench, sofa and chair. If you have anything you can lend, please contact Lynda at YRHS.
