From the Administration
It's been an exciting week at Hillel. We have been on TV and in several newspapers. On Tuesday, a group of Hillel and YRHS students brought over 700 pairs of socks to Notre Dame High School. We strung them up on a clothesline and formed a huge circle around the Notre Dame track with all the schools from Broadview - Nepean High School, Broadview Public School, Notre Dame, and Hillel and YRHS. It was very powerful to see all these students standing in the cold, holding hundreds of pieces of warm clothing for the Ottawa Mission, and we are proud to have been part of it. Here is a link to the news story in Metro newspaper.

The next day, we hosted Charles H. Hulse Elementary School, as well as a lot of press, for our annual 6th grade mitzvah for Mitzvah Day (this Sunday, the 6th at the SJCC). We were on the TV, as well as in the Ottawa Citizen. Here is a link to a small video the Ottawa Citizen has posted on our site.

Have a good weekend, and Shabbat Shalom,

- Donna Palmer-Dodds and Wendy Waxman

Hillel Hosts the Stock Market
Every second year, Hillel's grade 6, 7 and 8  students spent several days stockmarket4involved in a stock market challenge. The students formed groups of 2-4 people and created a brokerage firm. They developed names, slogans, business cards, costumes and jingles. They demonstrated a remarkable amount of creativity. (Right, the "Jew Bros" brokerage perform their jingle.)

It wasn't just fun, however. The teams spent a day and a half involved in a mock stock market - buying and selling stocks in imaginary companies based on prices and news provided each round. For a more detailed explanation of the program, we put the overview up on the website.

Hillel owes a huge thank you to the parent volunteers who gave up time to come sell stocks and pay dividends. The program literally could not have worked without you. Thank you.

Hulse Visits Hillel for Mitzvah Day hulse4
The 6th grade students at Hillel Academy and Charles H. Hulse school are getting to know each other through letters and school visits. On Tuesday, the students from Charles H. Hulse came to our school to do a mitzvah for Mitzvah Day (which takes place on Sunday, December 6 at the SJCC). This year, they are sending books to a small school in Nunavut. Along with the gently-used books that the children brought in, Indigo Books and Music generously donated 80 new books for the project. For a personal touch, the students all made bookmarks to go along with the books.

To help the students understand more clearly the nature of their mitzvah, Hillel's grade 4 teacher, Deanna Coghlin (below), told the students about her trip to Pond Inlet. Using photos and some vivid descriptions, Ms. Coghlin told them about the very different culture among the Inuit. The students were amazed to discover, for instance, that a case of Coca Cola costs $50 and raw seal is a staple food. She also shared with them this fascinating link to Inuit throat singing.

100 books1
Congratulations to Boris and Lauren, from grade 1. They have read 100 books!
cookbookPTA Cookbook Contest
The PTA needs your help! They launched an initiative to sell the Hillel Cookbooks. These are great cookbooks, with all the old favourites from the original edition, plus many new recipies by Hillel parents for the revised 2009 edition.

We have reduced the price of the book to an unbeatable $20! The money raised selling these books will help the PTA to continue to pay for busing for field trips.

As an exciting enticement, the class that sells the most cookbooks will win a lunchtime pizza party and the 2nd and 3rd highest will get a cupcake party. Each student will be receiving an order form, and extra ones can be downloaded from the website.
Hillel Academy's Travel Agency
Grade 4 has been spending the past few weeks learning about Canada's provinces. They then put all that information to good use by creating tourism booths and invited the 5th grade students to decide which province they'd most like to visit. The 4th grade students did a great job of telling their clients all about the provinces they represented. Below, Noa presents Quebec to the visitors.

We Are Looking For ...
Oven
We now have a brand new one, thanks to a very generous donor. Our chef is delighted!

Winter Clothing
We are collecting both adult's and children's clothing for the Snowsuit Fund and the JFS Streetsmarts program. The items are starting to trickle in, so look for the coat rack in the front hall and please add what you have to it.

Items from the 1930s
Brighton Beach Memoirs, YRHS's school play (also starring grade 8's Mirren and Racheli!), is set in the 1930s. They will need to furnish a set with a couch and chair, a dining room table and chairs, an old sewing machine, a china cabinet, and an old radio. They will also need single beds, china and décor of the era. If you anything you can lend, please contact Lynda at YRHS.
