From the Administration Once again, it has been a whirlwind of activity here at Hillel - and we love it! The grades shared their Tikkun Olam projects with each other at an assembly this morning. They all made presentations filled with energy and fun. Everyone did a great job. You should be proud of the way your kids have been throwing themselves into their new projects.
The teachers have not only been collaborating on the Tikkun Olam projects, but on the curriculum as well. Last Friday was a PD day where, for the first time, the teachers got together for some collaborative planning. For example, all the language arts teachers have decided to do a unit based on the upcoming Olympics.
We also had Lin Dickson from YRHS in to work with the teachers on classroom management, and parent Sharon Reichstein (who is also a teacher) gave a presentation on Real Spelling.
We are sorry for the length of the Hadashot. There's just so much going on that we want to let you know about. Please take a moment to see what is going on in your school.
Shabbat Shalom,
- Donna Palmer-Dodds and Wendy Waxman

Some Important NotesPlease take note of the following:
-
Moshe's
Grill in the SJCC has closed permanently.
-
Unfortunately,
our hot lunch chef cannot be available next week due to family illness. The
lunches for Tuesday, November 24th and Thursday, November 26th
are cancelled. They will be made up in January.
-
Thursday,
November 26th is the
final deadline to submit lunch orders for December.
-
Friday, November 27th
is Dress-down Friday. For a loonie or a toonie, the students can wear street
clothes to school. And since the 8th graders always dress-down, we
are hoping they will also donate to a good cause. This month, the funds raised
will go to the Ottawa Mission Sock Drive.
- If you've signed up for Silver Birch don't forget to bring in your money. And you still have time to sign up!

The Children's Republic
Hillel's 6th, 7th and 8th grade students went on a field tripThursday afternoon to the Janusz Korczak exhibit at the Great Canadian Theatre Company. Janusz Korczak was a polish doctor and writer who ran an orphanage in WWII Poland. The GCTC has produced a play based on his life, and created an exhibit about his life and work that the students got to visit.
Thursday evening, a group of the students were also fortunate enough to go back to see the play itself. Above, Rachel and Jordan, and below, Shmuli, reading the exhibit.

Tikkun Olam Assembly Grades K to 8 had an assembly Friday morning to tell each other about their grades' Tikkun Olam projects. Students from each grade sang and performed skits to illustrate what their projects are about.
Left, Birthday Angel's ambassador Gabriel explains the program with the help of Sam and Rachel. Below, Nathan, Racheli, Jacob, Caleb, Hannah and Corey perform their own lyrics to "Don't Stop Believing" to tell the students about the Ezra and Street Smarts program. For a list of every grade's Tikkun Olam projects, go to our web site.

Sock Drive Our
Sock Drive for the Ottawa Mission is drawing to a close, but you still
have another week to get those socks into us, so please help the
students reach their goal. (Right, Taylor and Samara hold up the Sock Drive Thermometer they created). And our Winter Clothing Drive is ongoing.
It's about to get cold here in Ottawa, so please help us in our goal to
provide warm winter clothing to those in need.

Grade 5s Hold a Magic Show for ADK
The grade 5 core French students held a magic show for the ADK students on Thursday. They made program guides, got dressed up and performed tricks, using the kindergarten kids (and Mr. Morenstein) as volunteers. Below, Noah and Gil explain to Zack what he needs to do to help. To see photos of all the other acts, see our photo gallery.

Grade 8s have fun at YRHS Shadow Day Thursday morning, the 8th grade students from Hillel got a little taste of high school during the Yitzhak Rabin Shadow Day. The grade 8s attended classes (right, Mr. Walia demonstrates a science experiment). They also had lunch and a great time playing improv games with the ninth grade students from YRHS. Below, Jonathan and Mirren act out a scene in Mrs. Robinson's drama class while the other students and staff look on.

David and Olivia pose beside their grade 2 reading chart. The 2nd grade students read 100 books. Thanks to their efforts and those of students in other schools city-wide. 100,000 books will be donated by Scholastic to children in need.

Three students - Samara, Jonathan and Daniel - were awarded the P.R.O. (People Respecting
Others) Award this week for demonstrating respect and inclusion to
their peers. This week a teacher also got the award! Morah Yaffa was nominated by Morah Ruthie.

Bulletin Subscription Offer The Ottawa Jewish
Bulletin has offered Hillel a great deal. Our parents can subscribe through the school and for every new subscription we provide, the Bulletin will give our school a
percentage.
Subscribing to the
Bulletin is a great idea not only because it now also benefits our school, but
because the Bulletin has always been a great supporter of Hillel Academy. We frequently have articles in the newspaper about new initiatives at Hillel, allowing us to reach the larger community and let them know about the wonderful things that have been going on here.
Hillel is not the only local Jewish institution that reaches a wider audience through the Bulletin. For $30 a year, you can keep up on what is going on in Ottawa's Jewish community. Just email us if you are interested and we will pass your contact information on to the Bulletin.

Visitors to Hillel Hillel had two visitors this week. Rabbi Markowitz, a Hassidic rabbi from New York, came into Rabbi Simes' 6, 7 and 8 classes to tell the students about his life and answer questions.
Dr. Neil Bellack visited the 5th grade to talk to the students about nutrition and healthy eating.

Rosh Chodesh Kislev
Grades 7 and 8 held a rosh chodesh service
again this month, with the grade 8s leading the service for the 7s. Bram led
the service, with Jonathan reading Torah. Zoe explained and led the classes in
the reciting of the Shema, (right) with Sarah, Shira, and Eliana explaining other parts of
the service. Below, Kolten dresses the Torah as Rabbi Burger holds it.

We Are Looking For
... Old CDs/DVDs and Cases Morah Ruthie has another art project on the go!
Winter Clothing We are collecting both adult's and children's clothing for the Snowsuit Fund and the JFS Streetsmarts program. The items are starting to trickle in, so look for the coat rack in the front hall and please add what you have to it.
Items from the 1930s
Brighton Beach Memoirs, YRHS's school play (also starring grade 8's Mirren and Racheli!), is set in the 1930s. They will
need to furnish a set with a couch and chair, a dining room table and chairs,
an old sewing machine, a china cabinet, and an old radio. They will also need
single beds, china and décor of the era. If you can think of anything of use, please contact Lynda at YRHS.
A Large Mix-Master Thanks to the families who donated the blender and the mix-master!
|
The grade 8s got their chance to do one of Morah Ruthie's art projects to prepare for the "Chanukah Around the World" performance (at 7 pm on Wednesday, December 16th).
