From the Administration
A couple of weeks ago, we said good-bye and thank you to our old board, but we also want to make sure to introduce you to our new, amalgamated board now that they have really started to get down to work.

We had a hard-working nominating committee interview all our highly-qualified candidates, and we think they did a great job of choosing the perfect ones for the job - a great mix of old and new, parent and non-parent.

Therefore, we would like to formally welcome our members of our new Board:

Lisa Miller and Sabina Wausserlauf (co-presidents), Adam Aptowitzer, Bonnie Boretsky, Alan Echenberg, David Eskanazi, Faye Goldman, Susan Margles, Lynn Rockman, Nicole Rosenberg, Nathan Smith, Ron Vered, Fred Seller.

This is the end of the school week for you children, but we will be hard at work here tomorrow with our Professional Development Day. We hope you enjoy your long weekend.

Shabbat Shalom,

- Donna Palmer-Dodds and Wendy Waxman

Some Important Notes
Please take note of the following:
  • Tomorrow, Friday, November 13, is a PD day!
  • Next week is Canadian Children's Book Week, the largest celebration of Canadian books for children and teens in Canada. Cynthia Bates is YRHS's principal, but she is also a published author of sports stories for young people. She will be reading from her books on November 17th at 12:15. Everyone is invited to attend!
  • For those who had photo retakes done, please return your form to Ellie by Monday, November 16.
remembrance3Remembrance Day
Hillel had a quiet and sombre Remembrance Day ceremony on Wednesday morning. Eighth-grade students Caleb and Shira were the MCs. Jacob and Idan played the piano and each grade created and presented a wreath. Students from other grades read poems in English, French and Hebrew. (Right: Josh, Jordan, Hannah and Victoria read "In Flanders Field". For photos of the other presenters, see the photo gallery as of Friday.)

A special guest joined us for the ceremony as well. Stan Katz, who was the Director of Education at Hillel Academy from 1984-1994, is also a veteran. He came to talk to the students about his personal experiences and the significance of Remembrance Day.

certificate2
Four students from grade 2 were awarded the P.R.O. (People Respecting Others) Award this week for demonstrating respect and inclusion to their peers. Kayla, Jayden, Abby and David not only got their certificates, but they also got to be the students who presented their classes' wreaths at the Remembrance Day ceremony.
A Visitor from Uganda
Hillel had an interesting visitor on Wednesday when JJ Keki came to visit the Senior School and High School students. Mr. Keki is a leader of the Jewish community in Uganda. He is also a musical performer, who sang a traditional Ugandan Jewish song for the audience.

Unlike the Ethiopian Jewish community, which split off from mainstream Judaism hundreds of years ago before the fall of the Second Temple, the Jews of Uganda first appeared as a community in 1919. A man named Semei Kakungulu read the Bible closely and decided that the only way to truly follow it was to become a Torah Jew. A leader, he convinced his entire community to follow him. To read more about JJ Keki and the fascinating history of the Ugandan Jews, click here.

Morah Sheli's 5th grade students were also allowed to attend the assembly and were lucky enough to meet Mr. Keki afterward. Below, Daniel, Aidan, Mr. Keki, Noah, Daniel and Jonathan.

The Kippot Have Arrived
For those who pre-ordered the Guatemalan kippot being sold by the fifth grade students, their kippot will be available for pick-up in the Hillel Academy lobby on Monday, November 16th  & Tuesday, November 17th, between 3:45 and 4:05 pm.  Please bring in your money and choose from a beautiful selection of hand crocheted kippot.

For those who haven't yet ordered any of these beautiful kippot, join the crowd! They are $15 each or $25 for two. You can buy them at the SJCC Chanukah Fair on November 22nd, or still put in an order through the school.

Learning Music in School
Ms. Coghlin's grade 4 students have been given a great opportunity this year to learn how to play an instrument and play with the NAC Orchestra. The students all have their own recorders, and throughout the year they will learn how to play various songs. At the end of May the students will get to perform in the 'Let's Go Mozart' program. Students will play their recorder at the National Art Centre to the theme from Mozart's Piano Sonata in A.

Israel's 12 Tribes get their own Chagall Windows at Hillel
Morah Kugler's 5th grade students have been learning about the 'shevet' - Israel's 12 tribes. Each student was assigned a tribe and got to learn all about the tribe, its location and the meaning of the name. They also learned about the painter, Marc Chagall, and the beautiful windows he created. Then, using their new knowledge about the shevet and Chagall, the students designed and drew their own 'windows' on the windows in their classroom. The result is a room filled with gorgeous, colourful and creative artwork. If you happen to be in the school, it is worth popping up to the room to take a look for yourself.

Grade 1 Finds Success in "Read to Succeed!"
"Read to Succeed" is a program sponsored by the Senators hockey team. Our first grade students met their goal of successfully reading a full 100 books in October. They were very proud of themselves, as are we. The Senators were pretty impressed too, and offered the students a pizza party as a reward. When told that we couldn't accept, as the pizza isn't kosher, the Senators came up with 2 tickets for each child to a hockey game instead! The kids agreed that tickets are way better than pizza any day. Below, one of the first grade classes hold up the tickets and bookmarks they were awarded.

Rabbi Blum Brings Candle-making to Hillelblum havdalah
Rabbi Blum of the Ottawa Torah Center visited the school on Tuesday, bringing two different projects with him. The students in grade 4 got to make spice bags (right, Rabbi Blum helps Meredith with hers) and beeswax havdallah candles to bring home. (Below, Steven demonstrates his half-braided candle.)

Then the kindergarten classes got to make Shabbat candles and candleholders that they brought home. Below, Rabbi Blum helps Zev dip his candle for the last time. For more photos of the candle-making, you can check out our photo gallery (remember, the login is 'parent' and the password is 'parent101.')

We Are Looking For ...
No More Newspapers!
We have enough to paper mache the whole school now, so we're good, thanks.

Old CDs/DVDs and Cases
Morah Ruthie has another art project on the go!

Winter Clothing
We are collecting both adult's and children's clothing for the Snowsuit Fund and the JFS Streetsmarts program. The items are starting to trickle in, so look for the coat rack in the front hall and please add what you have to it.

Items from the 1930s
Brighton Beach Memoirs, YRHS's school play (also starring grade 8's Mirren and Racheli!), is set in the 1930s. They will need to furnish a set with a couch and chair, a dining room table and chairs, an old sewing machine, a china cabinet, and an old radio. They will also need single beds, china and décor of the era. If you can think of anything of use, please contact Lynda at YRHS.

A Large Mix-Master
So far, our hot lunch chef, Samantha Freedman, has been blending her ingredients with a hand mixer, so a counter-top mixer would make her lunch preparation much smoother.

The students have been hard at work decorating the "Chanukah Around the World" programs to be handed out at the performance (at 7 pm on Wednesday, December 16th). Above, David and Yael discuss their designs.
