From the Administration It seems as though the school year has just really gotten under way, but people are already thinking about what they will be doing next year.
In a couple of weeks - on Tuesday, November 17 at 9 am - Hillel is having an Open House for parents of children going into kindergarten. Please help us spread the word about our great school and all the wonderful changes that have been happening recently. If you know of anyone who has a child going into kindergarten next year, please let us know and we will be happy to call and provide them with with an invitation to come and see our school on November 17th.
Also, please feel free to forward this and any other Hadashot to parents who you think might be interested in what is going on in our school. We are very proud of the little gem we have here, and we want to share that pride!
And speaking of pride, we are very proud of our 7 and 8 boys' soccer team. For the first time, Hillel made it to the soccer finals, where they played Ashbury College on a cold and rainy day. They lost, 1-4, but we are still incredibly proud of the the heart and spirit both they and the girls' team showed this season.
Shabbat Shalom,
- Donna Palmer-Dodds and Wendy Waxman

Sock and Winter Clothing Drive The socks for the Ottawa's Mission are starting to pile up, but there's still time to send some in. Left, Sascha, Lucy and Ma'ayan hold up socks in front of the sock bin in the front hall.
We are now also starting our Snowsuit Fund Drive. The Fund needs gently-used snowsuits, coats, boots, hats and mitts. Adult sizes are also needed, not only for the Snowsuit Fund, but for the Street Smarts Program the 7th graders are helping out. Please bring any donations to the front foyer.
The socks and winter clothing drives are our two school-wide Tikkun Olum projects. We also have projects per grade. We sent an email home detailing them, but they are also on the web site in the 'school life' section, where further information will be added as the projects progress.

Developing a Strong Character We here at Hillel have always worked on creating an atmosphere of caring and respect. This year, we have decided to formally recognize positive character traits, rewarding the students for working on their character development. Each month, we will focus on different traits. In November, the emphasis is on respect and inclusion.
When a teacher notices a student displaying these character traits, they will be presented with a certificate and have their pictures put up on the bulletin board and in the Hadashot. At the assembly on Wednesday where this was announced, several students were already recognized.

Below, front: Isaac, Harel, Sammy, Jonathan. Back: Ben, Mikah, Noa, Jordana and Bailey.

|
To start off the assembly, the students in grade 1 read a book on the theme of inclusiveness. Lauren, Gabrielle and Paige explained the book's message and its importance, and recieved certificates for their outstanding jobs.

Silver Birch is Back Again The Forest of Reading program is beginning for another year. Students from grades 1 to 6 can read books from a selection of new Canadian books over the year and vote on their favourite in the spring. They will also get a trip. Check out the Library section of our website for more details, and a permission slip. You can also go the Forest of Reading site for a list of all the books this year.
|
In grade two, good behaviour is rewarded with various privileges and one of the most special is getting to stay in at recess and read a story to a student in grade one. This week, Maya got to read ScoobyDoo to Alex.

We Are Looking For
... Old Newspapers We are gearing up for our Hanukkah celebration, Hanukkah Around the World, and our preparation involves a school-wide papier mache project - so we need your old newspapers! We need LOTS of newspaper. Instead of putting your old newspaper in the recycle bin, recycle it by bringing it to us. There will be a bin in the front foyer.
Items from the 1930s
Brighton Beach Memoirs, YRHS's school play (also starring grade 8's Mirren and Racheli!), is set in the 1930s. They will
need to furnish a set with a couch and chair, a dining room table and chairs,
an old sewing machine, a china cabinet, and an old radio. They will also need
single beds, china and décor of the era. If you can think of anything of use, please contact Lynda at YRHS.
A Large Blender It was a big request, and the PTA would like to thank the family who very generously donated a stove, fridge and stand up freezer to our kitchen. So far, our hot lunch chef, Samantha Freedman, has been blending her ingredients with a hand mixer, so a counter-top blender would make her lunch preparation much smoother.

Grade 7 and 8 had a cold and wet visit to LaFleche Caves, but they still had lots of fun! For more photos of the rest of the week, check out our photo gallery.
