From the Administration This week was Teen Read Week, and Fiona Macintosh, our teacher librarian, organized a lot of great activities to attract the older students into the library. She was successful beyond expectations, and the library was buzzing this week, as the photo below demonstrates. The grade 7s and 8s watched short movies, snacked, and learned how to draw cartoons and make lunch bags from duct tape.
The event was so successful that Mrs. Macintosh is considering turning it into a monthly event. It is great to see the library becoming a meeting place for our older students.
The progress reports are being emailed out to parents today. Unlike the past few years, this year we are sending them to all the parents, so check your in-box for yours. Shabbat Shalom,
- Donna Palmer-Dodds and Wendy Waxman

Some Important NotesPlease take note of the following:
- Hillel is offering a Friday aftercare program with the SJCC, starting on November 6, when early dismissals begin. The program will be held at Hillel and will go to 4 pm (not 5 pm, as previously announced). For more information and to download a registration form, go to our site. Return the form, with a cheque made out to the SJCC, to our office.
- There will be a PTA meeting at co-president Jenny Glassman's house on Thursday, October 29 at 7:30 pm, 951 Dresden Crescent. Everyone is welcome!

Rosh Chodesh Service The week started off with the 8th grade hosting the 7th grade in the Hillel Lodge Chapel for a Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan service. The grade 8 boys led and explained the service, and read the Torah.
Right, as the eldest 7th grade boy, Nadav receives the honour of dressing the Torah. Below, Jonathon chants Torah while Noam looks on.

Hot Lunches Update
The Hot Lunches were a big success this week. (Right, Dahlia tells her classmates how much she likes her lunch.) Anticipating
an influx of last-minute orders, the PTA have agreed to extend the
deadline for November orders from yesterday to next Tuesday, October 27th.
Don't forget that you can also order a meatless tomato sauce for the spaghetti but indicate that please. Please remember to keep a copy of what meals you ordered for which child so there is no confusion.
Please
note that this will be the only extension, as the Hot Lunch program is
just starting, and the other deadlines will be firm.

Pumpkin Run
Grades 2-6 had lots of fun at the Pumpkin Run this year. (Nadav from grade 2 was overheard enthusing, "I got exercise AND a pumpkin!") The students ran with lots of spirit and energy.

Our Students Go MADD
It wasn't a school
activity, but when Madame Kettles went to the MADD Dash 5k run, she was
delighted to run into a lot of Hillel students out for a great cause. To the
right, Josh ran with his mother. Check our photo gallery for more photos of
Hillel students and parents at the Run, as well as photos from the rest of the week at Hillel Academy.

Dress Down for Birthday
Angels
Don't forget that next
Friday, October 30, is dress-down Friday. For a loonie or a toonie, your
children can buy the privilege of coming to school in street clothes for the
day, and the money raised will go to charity. Each month, the funds will go to
a different charity.
Last month, the money
went to the Terry Fox Foundation. This month, the money will go to something
very different, an organization called "Birthday Angels."
Birthday Angels is an
Israel organization that ensures under-privileged children get birthday parties.
The children in grades K-2, who understand the importance of birthday parties, will be raising more funds for this organization as their Tikkun Olum
project.
Gabriel and
his friend Max, from 5K, will be spearheading this project with the younger grades.
Gabriel's father sits on the board of Weizmann Science Canada, which promotes Birthday Angels in Canada, and so Gabriel brought the idea to
Hillel. The two boys will be brainstorming with students in the younger grades
to come up with more fundraising ideas for their project.

Tikkun Olum Project Updates
The 8th graders decorated a bin to collect socks and it is sitting in the foyer, waiting to be filled up. We are looking for new mens' socks, which will then be donated to the Ottawa Mission to be handed out to the homeless over winter.
The 5th graders were out in the lobby during lunch hours encouraging people to order kippot for their tikkun olum project. (Below, Maya,
Zachary and Max take an order from Mrs. Palmer-Dodds, who thinks they make great gifts.)

Fire Drill
There was a fire drill
at Hillel on Wednesday, and Mrs. Palmer-Dodds was delighted to announce that
the staff and students did a great job of exiting the building quietly and calmly. The
entire building was in the yard in less than 4 minutes.

We Are Looking For
... An Oven We know it is a big request, but the PTA would love to accept any old ovens with a stove top. If you happen to be redoing your kitchen, please think of us!
Old Greeting Cards Don't throw out those lovely Rosh Hoshanah cards you received in September! Morah Ann-Lynn in ADK wants them. She'd also like old birthday cards, bat or bar mitzvah or any other kind of card. They'll recycle the pictures on the front to make new art.
Children who are missing pieces of their uniform In the main office, there are unlabelled pieces of the uniform. Please, please put your child's name in their uniform pieces and if they have lost something that was not labelled, please send them to Ellie or Eslyn.

3D had a great time at
the pumpkin run, and then had a great time with their pumpkins. They dressed
them up, then spent the afternoon including their gourd friends in their
activities. They read to their pumpkins, learned about pumpkin seeds and taught
their pumpkins math.
