From the Administration
We've been having great fun this week visiting the sukkah we decorated over at the SJCC. All the classes got a chance to have a snack and shake the lulav and etrog.

Sukkot has been wonderful, but if we had to identify a theme for this Hadashot, it would be 'Tikun Olam.' We have a very personal and significant mitzvah performed by first grader Maayan, to the kippot project by grade 5, to the sock drive that we hope will involve the entire school.

We are so very proud of our students. They are learning to look beyond their own families and school community and seeing how their actions can help others. Learning how to positively affect the world around them is as important to our students as Math and Hebrew, and we think they are doing a great job.

And speaking of giving back, two Hillel parents are co-chairs of the Federation's annual campaign telethon. During the weekend of October 17th and 18th, Rena Kimia and Mitchell Sabloff, along with as many volunteers as they can find (including some of our students!), will be doing the difficult job of phoning people to raise money for the community. The funds they raise go to supporting many valuable institutions in our community, including our school. So if you have a few hours to spare next weekend, please contact Rena and offer her your time.

Shabbat Shalom, Chag Sameach and have a great long weekend!

Teacherweb
We are delighted to announce that all the teacherweb.com sites are up and running. Check them to find announcements, class schedules, homework, project rubrics and helpful links.

Now that the teachers have done their part, you have to do yours! Check their sites regularly to be kept up to date with what is going on in your children's classrooms.

To get to the sites, you can go to www.teacherweb.com and click on 'Find your teacher,' or go to Hillel's web site under Parents to find a list of the sites. (Remember that the Parent section of our web site is password protected. The login is "parent" and the password is "parent101.")
Fun in the Sukkah
justin sukkahThere was something new in our sukkah this year. The 8th graders split up into groups of 2 or 3 and each visited the sukkah with one of the other classes. They created games or found songs or stories to present to the younger students to help make the visit more meaningful.

Right, Justin from 5K has fun shaking the lulav and etrog. Below, Isaac and Idan from grade 8 play a Sukkot-themed version of hangman with Morah Sarah's first grade class.

Check out our web page Photo Gallery for more pictures from the sukkah and the rest of the week.

We Need Socks!
Grade 8 is collecting new socks for the Ottawa Mission, which distributes them throughout winter to homeless people in need.

This is one part of a remarkable joint social action project with all the schools along Broadview - Hillel Academy, YRHS, Notre Dame High School, Broadview Public School and Nepean High School. The kick-off was this Thursday morning and there will be a large barrel in the front hall that we hope our parents will fill. The goal is to  string a clothesline down Broadview Ave. and fill it with the collected socks when it is over.
socksSpeaking of socks, now that the weather is getting wetter, please send an extra pair to school for your own children too. We all need warm socks!
Lice Squad
We had a visit from the Lice Squad again this year.

Lice Squad is a professional organization that sends trained nurses to schools to check the school populations for lice. If any are discovered, they assist the parents to quickly and efficiently treat the child so he/she misses a minimum amount of school time.

This year, like the last, the PTA generously came forward to fund having Lice Squad check our students.

Health Education
The Health Education Program for our grade 5, 6, 7 and 8 students will be starting the week of October 19th. The students will be divided by gender and grade for the majority of the program and will be taught by registered nurse Janet Nevala, who ran the program last year as well.

A letter explaining the program in more detail and a form that must be signed and returned was sent home this week. However, if you need another one, you can find it on our web site.
Maayan's Mitzvah
Maayan from grade 1S came up with her own mitzvah project over the High Holidays. Like other generous Hillel students before her, Maayan decided to donate her hair to charity. Not only did she cut and donate her hair to Angel Hair for Kids, she also raised $175 for the organization by going door-to-door just prior to Yom Kippur. We at Hillel are very proud of Maayan and her mitzvah!

Kippot Fundraiser
Grade five's Tikkun Olam project this year is to sell beautifully woven kippot created by Mayan women in Guatemala. Mayan women traditionally make many different woven objects, but were taught a few years ago how to make kippot as well. Below, Josh, Daniel, Aidan and Daniel model 4 of many patterns available. They are $15 for one kippah or $25 for two, and to buy, just find your nearest 5th grader.

Ottawa Jewish Community School
Hillel Academy's Special General Meeting was held last week, where the two boards of Hillel and YRHS were merged into one. The co-chairs are Lisa Miller and Sabina Wausserlauf.

The high school and elementary school are now officially one school, called the Ottawa Jewish Community School (OJCS); however, the elementary school will still be called Hillel Academy and the high school remains YRHS.

Sabina admits that those with close ties to each school had reservations about the changes, but says that the process went more smoothly than anyone expected.

The merge not only means more shared resources but shared experiences, such as 8th graders in the high school play and 9th graders in Hillel's Hanukkah production. Sabina said that combining these resources will allow the creation of one centre of education excellence, and that she is looking forward to similar growth and successes that Winnipeg and Vancouver experienced when they merged their day schools.
We Are Looking For ...

Old Greeting Cards
Don't throw out those lovely Rosh Hoshanah cards you received in September! Morah Ann-Lynn in ADK wants them. She'd also like old birthday cards, bat or bar mitzvah or any other kind of card. They'll recycle the pictures on the front to make new art.

Children who are missing pieces of their uniform
In the main office, there are unlabelled pieces of the uniform.  Please, please put your child's name in their uniform pieces and if they have lost something that was not labelled, please send them to Ellie or Eslyn.

Small Coffee Cans
We now have the cans we needed to make tzedakah boxes to go in every classroom. Thanks to those who sent them in.
