Cellphone Ban
Police say that drivers are 4 more times likely to crash when on a cellphone. Don't forget that the Ontario ban on cellphone use in cars came into effect last week. And that it includes parking lots!

From the Administration The school now is buzzing with extra-curricular activities. Our clubs are up and running, giving the students lots of options for recess fun. Some clubs are already helping the students prepare for our Hanukkah presentation in December. Others are run by students and, of course, there's always House League sports. (Look below for several club photos.)
Speaking of sports, our Hillel Hurricanes are having a great start to the soccer season. Wednesday, the boys' team won a hard-fought battle against Ashbury, 3-1. GG, Idan and Yona each scored for Hillel.
It was great to see how proud the entire team was of their victory, and they have every right to be. They pulled together beautifully as a team, demonstrating great sportsmanship.
Watching them return from their game made us proud too, not only of our soccer team, but of our entire Hillel team. Just as the sports teams are learning to work together for the best possible result, we feel that our students and teachers are doing the same, and we have much to be proud of.
We hope everyone has a wonderful start to Sukkot. Look forward next week to lots of pictures of the students in the sukkah. Also, please remember to label your children's clothing so that we can return it to them when it is found.
Shabbat shalom,
- Donna Palmer-Dodds and Wendy Waxman

Math 101Do you know what a Math rubric is?
Your children do!
If you'd like to find out about that and more, please come to our Math 101 for Parents Workshops next week. Beata Myhill, our Math Resource teacher, will be telling parents about how Hillel is teaching the subject and why, as well as how parents can support their child's math education at home.

The times of the Workshops are as follows:
Grades K to 2: Wednesday, October 7, 7:00
to 8:30 pm.
Grades
3 to 8: Thursday, October 8, 7:00 to 8:30 pm.
Please rsvp to Ellie so we know how many people to set up for.
For more information on this and our Math Resources in general, you can find the section on our web site.

Terry Fox Run Totals Our first Terry Fox Run was not only a lot of fun, but a great success! The students of Hillel Academy raised $425 from the loonies and toonies they brought in to dress down on Friday.
The
students at YRHS not only worked on getting pledges, but held a
fund-raising breakfast outside the JCC. With fewer than 30 students,
they still managed to raise $1,370.
Their principal, Cynthia Bates, and math/phys. ed./physics teacher, Amy McKay, promised to hold a jello-eating contest
if the students broke the $1,000 mark. As promised, the contest was
held on Tuesday. It was a tight race, but Ms. McKay prevailed over Ms.
Bates. (Below, Ms. McKay, in the green, celebrates her victory over Ms.
Bates, in white.)

M. Cinanni

Reach-Ahead Music YRHS offered Hillel's grade 8s the opportunity to take a music course after school for a high school credit. This week, the 8th graders who signed up got to try out the instrument options with Colleen Rousom. Right, Daniel gets the trumpet to make loud noises (it's just like blowing a shofar!)

We Are Looking For
... Exercise Ball
Stands Morah Sheli, our Hebrew Resource teacher, has discovered that children with ADHD learn better in her class while they are allowed to move. The school now has several exercise balls, but she could still use stands so the kids can't bounce all over the place. If you have an unused stand or would like to donate the funds for one, please contact Ellie in the office.
Small Coffee Cans Keep them coming! If you have any small, clean coffee or matzah meal cans, we would love to use them to make tzedakah boxes. Please drop them off in the office.
Library Furniture We got the bar stools Mrs. Mackintosh was hoping for. Thanks for the donation!
