We forgot to specify this in the Handbook, so we'd like to remind parents that Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are DAIRY days. Please only send dairy or parve lunches and snacks on those days. Tuesdays and Thursdays are MEAT days. Please only send meat or parve lunches and snacks on those days.
Hillel Hurricanes
Coach Cinanni has posted the Hurricanes' soccer schedules on the web site.
Uniforms and Sweaters
Now that the weather is turning cooler, students are starting to wear sweatshirts to school. Please note that once children are in school, they can only wear Hillel cardigans or fleeces.

From the Administration
Now that the students are settling in to their new academic routines, it is time to add some fun! Clubs are starting next week. You should have already received the email message with a list for the fall (but you can also find them on the web site). Please check it out. We have some old favourites, but also a lot of new ones for the students to try.

The library is also opening up next week. You can check the 'Library' page on our web site for a schedule of when each class will be visiting.

Next Friday, we are delighted to be participating for the first time in the Terry Fox National School Run Day. Ms. Kettles has been working hard organizing it, but in order to make sure the event runs smoothly, we need the help of some parent volunteers. Please contact Ellie if you can help.

Speaking of volunteers, we want to thank the parents who came in this week to help cut up apples and distribute apples and honey to all the classes. We also had parents in to help with photo day on Thursday. We are very grateful for the help - you make our school run more smoothly.

And finally, a big thanks to the students of 8C, who prepared and delivered a school-wide Rosh Hoshanah broadcast today. It was a big success.

It has been a sweet beginning to our school year and we are looking forward to a very sweet new year.

Shana tova to all of you,

Donna Palmer-Dodds and Wendy Waxman

Find the Celebrity!
Henry3Hillel students got a surprise visit from actor and author Henry Winkler on Tuesday morning. Mr. Winkler said he was in the bottom 3% academically (thanks to dyslexia only diagnosed in adulthood). His parents nicknamed him 'dumb dog.' He told the students that it is wonderful if they are good students, but it isn't necessary to be a successful adult. "Just find out what you are great at and then do that thing. And you are ALL great at something."

Mr. Winkler has a series of 17 books about a 4th grader, Hank Zipzer: The World's Greatest Underachiever. He read a couple of selections from his novels, then answered many questions from the kids, ranging from if he really jumped a shark (nope - stuntman) to who his favourite actor is (Ron Howard).
Henry4When asked to take a photo with Mr. Winkler, the kids spontaneously swarmed the actor, resulting in the photo above (and in the Ottawa Citizen). (photos by Peter Waiser)
Shana Tovabroadcast
Rabbi Simes' 8th grade class put together a Rosh Hoshanah broadcast that Racheli, Dayna and Nathan presented over the loudspeaker (right). The rest of the 8th graders went to each classroom to teach the students a song, do an activity with them and give them apple cake and treats. Below, Allec works with the kids from grade 3.

Fifth Graders Learn Study Skills
As was mentioned during the Curriculum Evening, Mrs. Waxman has been teaching the 5th graders a class in study skills. So far, she has been helping them evaluate their learning styles, finding out whether they are visual, auditory or kinesthetic/tactile learners.

Finding out more about how how they learn will not only help students emphasize their strengths, but teach them how to compensate for their weaknesses. Look forward to your 5th grader bringing home information about this and even showing you how to find out what type of learner you are.

Below, Gregory, Gabriel, Joshua and Madelyn brainstorm about how different types of learners learn information.

Terry Fox Run
Next Friday, September 25th, is the Terry Fox National School Run Day. This year, Hillel Academy and Yitzhak Rabin High School will be among the participants. Students and teachers will be running or walking around our campus in the morning.

The Run happens to fall on the same day as Loonie/Toonie Friday, when the terryfoxstudents can bring in one or two dollars for charity to buy the privilege of wearing street clothes to school. So please dress your children for running and send them to school with a small donation for the Terry Fox Run.

We are in need of parent volunteers to be stationed along the course. If you are able to join us for the morning, (from approximately 8:45-11:00 am), please email Ellie, or phone 722-0020. For more information about the run, please go to our web site.

In addition, YRHS is holding a fundraising breakfast starting at 8:15 am in front of the SJCC, with all funds going towards the run.

Jasper
Jasper is dwarfed by all the camera equipment as he sits for his first school photo on Thursday.
Creating a Shofar
Rabbi Blum taught the grade 8s how to make their own shofarot on Wednesday. Each student learned about how a shofar is created, while choosing and sanding their own. Below, 8C students shellac their shofarot.
shofar3
Testing out their new shofarot led to an impromptu demonstration for ADK from Nathan, Sebi and Mirren.

patterns
Ms. Gordon's first graders took advantage of the nice weather to search outside for patterns.
We Are Looking For ...

Exercise Ball Stands
Morah Sheli, our Hebrew Resource teacher, has discovered that children with ADHD learn better in her class while they are allowed to move. The school now has several exercise balls, but she could still use stands so the kids can't bounce all over the place. If you have an unused stand or would like to donate the funds for one, please contact Ellie in the office.

Small Coffee Cans
The coffee cans are starting to arrive, but we could still use more. If you have any small, clean coffee cans, we would love to use them to make tzedakah boxes. Please drop them off in the office.

Library Furniture
Mrs. Mackintosh is looking for any gently-used children's furniture and bar stools (for the teen section). If you have anything you would like to donate, please contact Mrs. Mackintosh.
