Perfume
Several parents have recently mentioned perfume allergies. Please remember ... No scents makes good sense! Thank you.

From the Administration We had two successful Curriculum Evenings this week. It was great to see all the returning parents and meet some new ones.
As well as allowing you to meet your children's teachers and get to know a little about how their academic year is going to unfold, the Curriculum Evenings allowed us to introduce some of the school-wide initiatives at Hillel Academy.
We instituted our classroom rules this week. The teachers worked with the students to develop their own rules and it turned into a marvelous exercise in understanding how a society functions. One class chose to call what they came up with, their 'Constitution.' Another chose 'Norms' rather than 'Rules.'
We also introduced our new Reflection Room to the students and parents. For those not at the Curriculum Evenings, you can go to our web site to download the Powerpoint presentation explaining this concept, as well as a sample of the Reflection Room packages. It will be a place for students to serve detentions if absolutely necessary, but our goal is to never have to use it!
We also mentioned our 'Math 101 for Parents' workshops coming up in October. We want to help parents understand the way we teach math and learn how to most effectively support your children. For more information on that, please see our Math Resource section on our web page.
Also, check below for more information on our delicious new hot lunch menu!

New Hot Lunch Program
The lunches offered by Hillel's PTA have come a long way in the past few years. This year, our new PTA chairs, Jennifer Glassman (pictured, left) and Marie Levine (right) got together with chef Sam Freedman (centre) to provide Hillel families with a new line of hot lunches every week. Along with the old favourites of hot dog and falafel, will come wraps, chicken, spaghetti and shepherd's pie. Sam Freedman, who used to own a restaurant when she lived in Israel, created the options just for Hillel and will be cooking them fresh every Tuesday and Thursday in our newly-cleaned and re-kashered kitchen. The lucky parents who attended the Curriculum Evenings were able to sample the meals that Mrs. Freedman (with assistance from helpers such as Adam, also pictured above, and Brianna, right) prepared. To learn more about the meals (such as the spaghetti bolognaise, below) and download order forms, please go to our web site. To see more photos of the food (and other pictures from the week) you can check out our Photo Gallery. |

Library happenings Our new librarian, Mrs. Mackintosh, has been busy down in the library bringing in several new initiatives. The installation of computers in the spring greatly expanded the library's research capacity, and Mrs. Mackintosh is also working hard to support the Study Skills classes instituted this year.
To learn about the new Library Squad and find many useful links, please check out the 'Library' section of our web site. And check back often, as more links are being added regularly.

We Are Looking For
...
Hand Sanitizer
Dispensers
A family has come forward and generously offered to donate the additional hand sanitizer dispensers that we were in need of, helping us with our proactive approach to combating H1N1 and other viruses. Thank you so much!
Exercise Ball
Stands Morah Sheli, our Hebrew Resource teacher, has discovered that children with ADHD learn better in her class while they are allowed to move. The school now has several exercise balls, but she could still use stands so the kids can't bounce all over the place. If you have an unused stand or would like to donate the funds for one, please contact Ellie in the office.
Small Coffee Cans If you have any small, clean coffee cans, we would love to use them to make tzedakah boxes. Please drop them off in the office.
Library Furniture Mrs. Mackintosh is looking for any gently-used children's furniture and bar stools (for the teen section). If you have anything you would like to donate, please contact Mrs. Mackintosh.
