From the Administration This has been a marvelous first week back! We have welcomed several new teachers and students and are working on many new initiatives to make our school the best it can be.
The students didn't return until Wednesday, but the staff and teachers have been hard at work during their PD days this week. They spent one afternoon updating their first aid training, and are learning how to use their new teacherweb.com sites (more on that below).
Dr. Maggie Mamen spent a morning talking to teachers about teaching children with non-verbal learning disabilities. Dr. Mamen is a renown child psychologist and author of the book "The Pampered Child." You can find her book on the topic of non-verbal learning disabilities here.
Dr. Uri Korin has been working with our Judaic staff on developing a scope and sequence for the Judaic curriculum, grades K-12.
We have a new code of conduct and this week all our teachers have been brainstorming with their students to come up with a list of classroom expectations to go along with our school values of:
Take care of yourself. Take care of others. Take care of Hillel Academy.
We are looking forward to meeting everyone on the curriculum nights. Please note that this year we are splitting them up into two nights: Wednesday, September 9th and Thursday, September 10th, from 6:45 - 8:45
pm. Wednesday is for parents with children in grades K-4 and Thursday
is for grades 5-8. Teachers will each have a chance to speak to you about their goals for the year.
See you there!

Save the Date! This December, Hillel Academy will be presenting a school-wide Hanukkah performance. It is booked for the evening of Wednesday, December 16th. Our drama teacher, Barry Carp, and our music and singing teacher, Shannon Eddy, are already hard at work with Morah Ruthie to prepare for the event.

Loonie/Toonie Fridays Mark your calendars - on the last Friday of every month, your children can buy the privilege of wearing regular clothes to school. Each month, a different grade will be allowed to choose the charity where the money they raised will go. Our first Loonie/Toonie Friday will be September 25th.

Website Changes Our web site (hillelacademy.ca) is undergoing some evolution. You'll notice that two sections, "Parents" and "School Life" now require a login. The login is 'parent' and the password is 'parent101.' Soon, there will be another tab for our photo gallery, but for now it is under the "School Life" tab.
Also, all our teachers now have their own sites on teacherweb.com. This will be a place for each teacher to put up homework, assignments, field trip dates, etc. You can find a list of links on our web site. Everyone is in the process of figuring their new sites out and some people find using this new technology easier than others, so please have patience if you check out a site and there isn't much there yet.

Uniform Policy
The students all look marvelous in their sparkling new uniforms. We have been getting a few questions, so we'd like to point out that our whole policy is up in the "Parents" section of our web site, here.
Please note that t-shirts are only to be worn during gym. Also, please send your children with an extra shirt to keep in their lockers in case of accidental spills.
Initially, the policy was that only black or navy socks were acceptable, but we've had a number of questions about that and this first year is a work in progress, so we've decided that white socks will also be allowed. When the students look as cute as Dina, Shira and Catherine do, how can we say no?

We Are Looking For
...
Hand Sanitizer
Dispensers
Last spring's
breakout of the H1N1 virus has reminded everyone of the importance of personal
hygiene in the prevention of illness. The school has purchased 16 hand
sanitizer dispensers and placed them strategically around the building, but
what we'd really love is to have one in every classroom. If you want to donate a
dispenser (or 10!), please contact Ellie in the office.
Exercise Ball
Stands Morah Sheli, our Hebrew Resource teacher, has discovered that children with ADHD learn better in her class while they are allowed to move. The school now has several exercise balls, but she could still use stands so the kids can't bounce all over the place. If you have an unused stand or would like to donate the funds for one, please contact Ellie in the office.
Small Coffee Cans If you have any small, clean coffee cans, we would love to use them to make tzedakah boxes. Please drop them off in the office
Library Furniture Mrs. Mackintosh is looking for any gently-used childrens' furniture and bar stools (for the teen section). If you have anything you would like to donate, please contact Mrs. Mackintosh.
