News You Can Use: GO Activities
Did you know that CATCH was originally designed as a cardiovascular disease prevention program? February - American Heart Month - is a good time to remember that CATCH is all about healthy hearts. Kids need 60 minutes of physical activity every day for good physical and cognitive development. In CATCH lingo, that's 60 minutes of GO Activities per day.
Adults can help kids monitor their own GO Activities by saying things like, "You know you're doing a GO Activity if your face is warm, you're sweating, you're breathing harder, and your heart is beating faster." CATCH encourages kids and adults to find GO Activities that are fun. These may be organized sports, dance parties in the living room or classroom, exploratory outdoor play, or active commuting. |

Milk Matters @ Paxson Elementary School
Kudos to Deena Mansour and the Paxson parents for organizing a creative milk promotion campaign!
Deena and her crew first organized a Milk Committee to carry out some peer education. This group of 4th- and 5th-graders created skits and songs and traveled from classroom to classroom to tell other students about the importance of milk and calcium.
Then, the parents, Milk Committee, and CATCH Team followed up with a special visit to the cafeteria to reward students for drinking milk. The positive reinforcement continues with weekly raffles and prize giveaways. Meanwhile, the parents and school staff are keeping track of lunchtime milk consumption to monitor the effects of the campaign.
Congratulations for truly coordinating the school's administration, faculty, staff, students, families, and community partners for the benefit of kids' health! |

Obesity Updates
If you would like to stay up-to-date on the latest research findings, news, and policies related to obesity in America, check out the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's (RWJF) weekly e-mail digest.
One recent article talked about significant differences in the eating habits and BMIs of adolescents who attend school near fast food restaurants vs. those whose schools are more than a half-mile away from fast food. How could this type of information change your school's policies and the health of your students? |
