News You Can Use: Healthy & Active Parties

Can kids' parties be healthy and fun at the same time?  Definitely!  Check out some tasty and creative ideas in this month's edition of the Eat Right Montana Newsletter. Our favorite tip for getting the party started:  put on some upbeat music, pull out one of the hundreds of fun games from the CATCH activity boxes, and start moving!
Russell Elementary Celebrates Walking to School

Thanks to Martha Robertson, at the Russell Elementary Family Resource Center, for inviting CATCH to help celebrate International Walk to School Day on October 8th.  Interns Laura Balis and Mary Nolan enjoyed taking part in the energetic rally that greeted the children and families who hoofed it to school on that cold Wednesday morning.

Our CATCH team would like to support your Home Team events, too!  In fact, we have hired a new intern, Mary Nolan, to bring CATCH to events like the walk rally, health fairs, and family fun nights.  Please contact Lisa or Marya for more information.
C.S. Porter Students Get Moving at Lunch

The students at C.S. Porter Middle School in Missoula have a 45-minute lunch period every day.  The students aren't known to linger over a leisurely meal; instead, they tend to eat quickly and spend most of their time outside on the playground.  The playground is spacious--there's a basketball court, one backstop, and plenty of grass--but there's no permanent play equipment like monkey bars or swings.  Some kids toss a football around or shoot hoops during the recess, but most kids end up just standing around.  Principal Gail Chandler has invited the Missoula CATCH team to turn this WHOA scenario into GO fun.

Intern Laura Balis designed CATCH Friday to help students get moving at lunch.  CATCH Friday offers a series of structured activities for the students (e.g., ultimate frisbee, kickball, hip hop dancing, flag football, etc.), plus just-for-fun equipment like hula hoops, jump ropes, and a stereo.  In the first two weeks of the program, we've seen encouraging changes on the playground.  A majority of students are now playing frisbee, jumping rope, hula-hooping, or gathering around the stereo to dance.  Stay tuned for progress reports throughout the year!
