Helping to change the lives of our remarkable Special Olympics athletes
Volume 3, July 2010

The count down is on!  July 8th is right around the corner and you know what that means!  You need to reach the minimum level of $1,000 in order to participate in Over the Edge.

Now many of you are so close that with just a gentle nudge via email to your family and friends you should easily hit the mark.  A few of you have a little bit further to go.  But don't get discouraged!  You can do it.  Policeman Tim Kaplan is the perfect example!  Tim came out to our Summer Games last weekend and heard about Over the Edge.  He signed up on June 25 and in 3 days raised over $1,000 and is currently at $1,310!  Keep up the great work Tim!  Raise $190 more to reach our $1,500 incentive level and you'll get Friday night housing at the Grand Hyatt and an Over the Edge baseball cap!

Come on my friends, you can do it!  C.U. Atthetop has faith that you can ALL hit the minimum mark and share an experience that no one else in Northern California will ever get the chance to experience.

Read on my Edgers for tips on how to raise your money!

fundraisingFundraising Tips!
Okay, here are a couple of tips on how to hit your fundraising goal (remember Tim Kaplan raised over $1,000 in 3 days!)

First and foremost - If you are collecting pledges in person, MAIL THEM IN TO ME.  I need to add them to your total as soon as possible.  Mail them to:

C.U. Atthetop
Special Olympics
3480 Buskirk Ave., #340
Pleasant Hill, CA  94523

Another way to prompt people to make a donation is send an update on your progress to everyone you originally emailed.  People who made a donation will appreciate the update on how close you are to your goal and people who haven't donated but meant to, get a gentle reminder to do so.

Consider cutting and pasting your Over the Edge page link in an email and send a progress report.  It is possible that some of your emails may have been spammed.

Take another look in your email address book.  If you haven't done so already, consider emailing clubs, organizations or church groups you may belong to and don't forget old high school friends and fraternity or sororities!

Remember to use your Facebook and Twitter pages as a way of reaching out to more people.

Lastly if you need a little motivation, remember that over 13,000 children and adults with developmental disabilities get to participate for FREE because of people like you.  Know that Special Olympics is much more than sports, it is training for life.  The skills our athletes receive by participating in Special Olympics carries over into their every day lives.

Special Olympics changes lives and you are helping to make that happen!

See you at the top!

CommonlyCommonly Asked Questions
Okay, my building bouncers here are a couple of answers to some commonly asked questions.

What should I wear?
You're going to be walking down the side of a building so wear good shoes.

Sneakers, light hikers, climbing shoes, something with a soft sole are acceptable.

No sandals, slip-on shoes, slippers, flip flops, high heels, or steel toed boot.

Wear long pants and a long sleeved shirt. Athletic pants, tights, and jeans, are suitable. The harness goes around your legs, waist, and shoulders, so it is best to avoid anything too bulky.

Shirts should be comfortable and without draw cords.

Long hair should be tied back.

Can I bring a camera?
Yes, but you you need to have it on a lanyard so it can be secured to your harness.  (We will have some on hand for you to borrow).

How long does it take to rappel?
Each rappeller will be allowed 15 minutes to make their decent.  Enjoy the view folks, it will be spectacular!  Some people are nervous and hurry down only to wish they could go back up and take it slower.  Sorry my friends, no "do-overs"!  Once you're on the ground it is on to the Post Celebration Party you go (unless of course you want to cheer for fellow rappellers!)

When will I know when I am rappelling?
We will be finalizing the schedules soon and will notify everyone of their schedule.  You will need to check in one hour prior to your decent time.  When you arrive you'll need to sign the waiver, receive your t-shirt and other incentive prizes you may have earned.  You will then be escorted to the staging area on the 36th floor where you will be fitted with your gear (harness, gloves and helmet) then escorted to the roof where you will be trained on the heliport before your actual descent.

postPost Celebration Party

Remember all rappellers are invited to our Celebration party on the Mezzine level of the Grand Hyatt immediately after your decent.  Yes, my loveable thrill seekers, no matter when you rappell, get ready to share bragging rights with friends and family at our Celebration party.  You'll be welcomed by our Special Olympics athletes who will greet you with a warm smile and a well deserved high five.  Sit down and rest your wobbly legs and tired hands while you enjoy some well deserved food and drink.  Care to toast to your victory? We'll have a no-host bar on hand where you can purchase your favorite "courage juice"!

Family and friends are more than welcome to the festivities and can join you for $20 a person; $10 for kids under 12 and free for ages 2 and under.

If you want to purchase guest tickets in advance, please print out the Celebration Guest Form.

Let the Party begin!
