"School is now OFFICIALLY over for me:)!!!! Great first year of college. Astounding with academics and physically fitness. For every parent, friend and spectator who said 'Why would you go to a military school or why would you let you daughter do that' statistically I surpassed the academic and fitness rate of first year college students. Now my question to all of you is 'Why not?'"

"15 years ago today I took my Oath of Office as a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Army. Hard to believe it's been that long. Big 'Holla' to my Marion Military Institute classmates (AKA the finest class that school has ever produced)!

Tiger Camp Prepares 60+ for the Army's Leader's Training Course

Tiger Camp, held at MMI each summer to prepare future MSIIIs for the Leader's Training Course (LTC) at Ft. Knox, is an integral part of our overall recruitment process. It enables MMI to attract, select and retain the highest caliber cadets and ensure their success in the Early Commissioning Program.
During two June/July cycles, more than 60 incoming cadets participated in training and teambuilding exercises such as map reading, drill & ceremony, paintball, one-rope-bridge, combat water survival and a 5K road march.

Brandon Taylor '97 Named Director of Alumni Affairs
The MMI Advancement Office is pleased to welcome Mr. Brandon Taylor as its newest Director of Alumni Affairs. A Marion native, he graduated from MMI as valedictorian of the high school class of 1997. As a cadet, he competed on the Tigers football, basketball and baseball teams.
Taylor is a registered nurse (RN) who holds a BSN from the University of Alabama and an MBA in healthcare administration from Florida Tech. He has been a full-time employee at MMI since 2006 and previously served in the Admissions office in addition to coaching the last high school football team. Before stepping up to head the MMI Alumni Office on July 9, he was Director of Cadet Health Services. In his new position, Taylor will manage Annual Fund giving as well as all alumni-related events and initiatives for the college.
"I am grateful for this opportunity to serve my alma mater and look forward to working with the many MMI alumni and friends who possess this same enthusiasm," says Taylor. "I am hopeful that relationships can be cultivated that will generate increased support. MMI is such a part of who I am, and I excited about reconnecting MMI with others who share this sentiment."
Taylor is currently treasurer of the MMI Alumni Brigade Board and has served as a Marion City Councilman since 2004, now seeking re-election. He has two sons: Whitfield (8) and Zane (1); he and his wife Jamie are expecting another child in December.

Olympic Wrestling Family Tradition
Come August, three Hazewinkel men will have represented the United States in Olympic Wrestling. Sam Hazewinkel, son of MMI wrestling coach Dave Hazewinkel and nurse Sue Hazewinkel, recently qualified for the London 2012 Games. His uncle, Jim Hazewinkel, also coaches the wrestling team at MMI.
The Hazewinkel twins are both two-time Olympians ('68 Mexico City & '72 Munich) who hold the record with the most World Games and Olympic appearances for brothers as teammates at the same time. In their six years in coaching the Tigers Wrestling Team, they have earned the following: 2 NCWA Southeast Conference Championships; 1 National Duals Championship; placing three times in the Top 5 at the NCWA National Tournament while competing against primarily four-year schools; producing three National Champion wrestlers.
Naturally, the pair is extremely proud of Sam, who will carry on the family tradition as an Olympian. At age 29, he is currently an assistant wrestling coach at his alma mater, Oklahoma University. Finally joining the U.S. team after placing third and second in previous Olympic Trials, Sam wrestles in the 121 lb. (55kg) freestyle class and will compete on August 10 in London.
