ROTC News

2LT Jeremy Brann (class of 2011) returned to MMI on Friday, 13 January, to speak to the Military Science Level IV (MSIV) class. He came to share his experience of making the transition from MMI Cadet to Second Lieutenant in the Army National Guard (ARNG), and all the pitfalls along the way.

His information pertaining to accessing tuition assistance benefits, integrating into the new ARNG unit, and managing school and career will hopefully help future MSIVs make a smooth transition. 2LT Brann is currently enrolled at North Georgia College & State University.

"Marion, I am grateful that my son decided to attend your college. I had not seen James since 10 August 2011 when I dropped him off at MMI! I can say he has grown so much! Thank you for your guidance and leadership! Truly it is making a difference in my son's life! Thank you and keep up the great work!"

USCGA Superintendent Visits MMI

On Thursday, Jan. 12, MMI had the pleasure of hosting Rear Admiral Sandra L. Stosz, Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA). Traveling from New London, Conn., with RADM Stosz were additional USCGA staffers LT Christopher Culpepper, LT Lindsey Seniuk and MCPO Lloyd Pierce. While visiting Marion, the Admiral's party met with senior staff, Service Academy Program instructors and USCGA-track cadets. A campus tour for the group showcased MMI classrooms and science labs, the historic Chapel, athletic facilities and renovated barracks.

MMI's Coast Guard Scholars and self-prep cadets (56 total) had the opportunity to spend time with RADM Stosz and her staff during a private lunch and afternoon awards ceremony. Speaking to the cadets, RADM Stosz stressed the importance of setting goals and time management as preparation for a successful transition to the Academy.

USCGA Superintendent RADM Sandra Stosz participates in a lunchtime pass in review.

Coach Suitts Has MMI Men's Basketball in the Conference Hunt

Head Men's Basketball Coach Tommy Suitts, would not have predicted being 13-3 overall and 3-0 in the Alabama Community College Conference his first year back at his alma mater. But that is exactly where his team is sitting early in the conference season *(as of 1/19). Marion has defeated Lawson State Community College on the road 61-48, and then took care of Wallace State Community College (74-53) and Gadsden State Community College (55-45) both at home. Coach Suitts will be the first one to tell anyone, including his team, that it is still early and the North Conference of the ACCC is extremely tough and anybody can win on any given night: "It is very early in the conference season, so we do not need to get overly excited. However, we are obviously very pleased with our play to this point. Our defense has been solid for the most part, and we are developing a more balanced offense. We are cautiously optimistic, and we look forward to the challenges the remainder of the season will present."

Sophomore David Murray, Leeds, Ala.
