Barracks Refurbishment Underway

Thanks to a generous lead gift to the Capital Campaign by Mr. James W. Rane, modernizing the MMI barracks is gaining momentum as the second phase of the Room to Grow project continues this summer.

By August, each floor in Murfee, Wilkerson and Rane Hall will be completely repainted and have new solid-core birch doors, stainless steel hardware, lever-action door locks, cove mold, and commercial- grade VCT tile flooring. All-new furniture will complete the look.

50+ Recruits Attend Tiger Camp:

Head to LTC at Fort Knox

road march
Road March

In June, more than 50 prospective Early Commissioning Program (ECP) cadets spent a week at MMI's

Tiger Camp to prepare for the Army's 4-week Leader's Training Course at Fort Knox.

While on campus, they were introduced to the basics of military life: physical training, team- building exercises, map reading, road marches, and Combat Water Survival Training, among other activities.

Four recent MMI graduates, now second lieutenants (Craig, Hollis, Overton and Wynne) served as cadre for two cycles of Tiger Camp. Concluding the experience were a paintball challenge and awards social in the QM.

Scholarship Spotlightnavy league

The Navy League of the United States-Mobile Council provided two scholarships to incoming MMI freshmen for Fall 2011. Ms. Mudiwa Barlow-Beck and Ms. Kyneesha Womack were each the recipient of a $1,000 Laura H. Stewart Scholarship, made possible by the late Admiral William H. Stewart, USCG (Ret) and his wife Paulette. Both women are from Mobile and will attend MMI as Coast Guard Scholars in the Service Academy Prep (SAP) program.

Volunteer for Cadet Move-In Days: Aug. 9-10

It's that time of year again! The anticipation is building as we prepare to receive our incoming freshmen in August. But we need your help. We will rely on volunteers to assist in the uniform department on Tuesday, August 9 and Wednesday, August 10 between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM each day.  All volunteers will receive an MMI Moving Company T-shirt. If you can volunteer for one or both days, please contact the Alumni Office at 334-683-2349/2350 or email Jamie Taylor.

"Plan on coming back to MMI for Move-In Days if you want to see many of your buddies; meet some young, dedicated Americans beginning their military experience at MMI; and enjoy the fellowship of alumni. Every year those of us who work during Move-In Days have a great time. Sign up today!"

Tigers Welcome 2 New Coaches

basso

Asst. Coach Basso

The Marion Military Institute softball team is pleased to announce the hiring of Kristi Basso as their new assistant coach. Kristi starred for four years at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. For the past two seasons, she has served as the pitching coach for the Fighting Okra. "We are extremely fortunate to have Coach Basso join us at MMI. It's rare to get someone with the depth of experience she has both as a player and coach. I am confident that she will do an excellent job for us," said MMI Head Softball Coach, Joe Guthrie.

suitts

Coach Suitts, MMI class of 1967JC

The MMI family welcomes Tommy Suitts back to Marion as he was recently named head men's basketball coach. Suitts graduated from MMI's junior college as valedictorian in 1967. While at Marion he was named All-Conference and All-American both his freshman and sophomore years. He transferred to the University of Alabama where he played for the legendary C. M. Newton. Suitts began his collegiate coaching career in 1974 as an assistant at Alabama and helped the Crimson Tide to two SEC titles. Suitts spent four seasons as an assistant and chief recruiter at North Alabama and helped the Lions to three Division II Final Four appearances.

Suitts became an assistant coach at Rice in 1979 and moved up to head coach in 1981. His teams at Rice defeated six nationally ranked teams. From 1987-90, Suitts served as the head coach at Chicago State. He brought the new Division I program with only five scholarships to a 12-win season in only two years and graduated more student-athletes than all other athletic programs at the school combined.

Suitts returned to high school coaching in 1992 and has served as head coach at six high schools. His 1992-93 team at Westbury Christian School in Houston, Texas, was the number-one-ranked private school in the greater Houston area with a record of 29-4. In 2007-08, Suitts was head coach at W. S. Neal High school in Brewton, Ala. Since 2009, he has been the Director of the Suitts Scouting Service.
