Scholarship Spotlight
In January, sophomore Dawit Solomon was summoned to the President's Office for an unexpected meeting. When he walked into the room, MMI President Col. David Mollahan, along with Vice President of Institutional Advancement Suzanne McKee and Flying Tigers Sponsors LCDR Sam Stevenson and Col. Bill Hansen, were there to present him with The Albert Cesarine, Sr. Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship has helped fund Cadet Solomon's flight training through The Flying Tigers Flight Club. The organization works with Sanders Flight Training Center to prepare and certify cadet pilots at Vaiden Field in Perry County.

"This scholarship will go a long way in helping me to complete my private pilot's license and eventually become a commercial pilot. I am grateful to the Cesarine family for their generosity in providing me this opportunity," said Solomon.
The Albert Cesarine, Sr. Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Mr. Albert Cesarine, Sr. by Mr. and Mrs. Albert T. Cesarine III, of New Castle, Delaware. Albert T. Cesarine III is an alumnus of Marion Military Institute's class of 1984.
Cadet Solomon is a 2007 graduate of the MMI Preparatory School. A veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, he returned to MMI in 2009 and enrolled in the Early Commissioning Program. Cadet Solomon is the son of Amy Techale and Aman Yohanes of Atlanta. Interested in establishing a flight scholarship of your own? MMI Signs Transfer Agreement with Auburn-Montgomery
MMI recently celebrated a new relationship with Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM). In a March 23 ceremony in the historic MMI Chapel, MMI President Col. David J. Mollahan and AUM Chancellor John G. Veres III signed a transfer agreement indicating that the two institutions will establish processes to facilitate the seamless transfer of MMI graduates to AUM for the purpose of earning a bachelor's degree. After earning an associate's degree, MMI students will now be guaranteed acceptance in AUM with up to 64 awarded credits transferring if they have a minimum of C in each course, a cumulative GPA of 2.0, are listed in good standing, and complete the AUM application process.
Co-authored by retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Robert J. Russell, Jr., Professor of Military Science at AUM, the transfer agreement will be a natural bridge for MMI graduates interested in AUM's new Organizational Leadership major. Sharing in military history,AUM counts two former chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff among its alumni. |

Tell Your Stories: Announcing the MMI Oral History Project
The MMI Foundation's new archivist, Erin Jones, is launching the MMI Oral History Project during Alumni Weekend 2011, and she is eager to hear your stories. On Thursday, April 7 and Friday, April 8, she and some dedicated volunteers will be operating two recording stations in the Archives to piece together the stories belonging to MMI and its surrounding area. She will then transcribe, catalog and prepare them to share with future generations of MMI Cadets and faculty/staff.
"A lot of MMI's history is in someone's memory. As archivist, it's my job to preserve MMI, Marion and Perry County's history. The more the community contributes, the better our Archives will be," notes Erin.
If you are interested in sharing your Marion memories, please email Erin or call 334-302-1038 for an appointment. Don't have time to sit down and talk? Email stories or letters are welcome, too. "No story is too small, too short, too old or too recent," she writes.

Because of you we have ROOM TO GROW: The Annual Fund Campaign
Invest in MMI's future by pledging to help modernize our barracks. So far, supporters of Room to Grow have helped the MMI Foundation refurbish all 8 day rooms and 26 rooms in the barracks for the benefit of the Corps of Cadets. Serving as a showcase for the improvements, the first floor of James W. Rane Hall features the all-new look, complete with new furniture, doors and hardware.
Now ALL rooms will be refurbished this summer and next, thanks to your generosity and that of Mr. James W. Rane! However, we MUST continue to grow the Annual Fund to help us meet our most pressing needs and reach our modernization goals. Gifts of at least $3,000 to the Annual Fund will still allow you to dedicate a room with a bronze plaque.

UPDATE: Total rooms dedicated = 36
To reserve the room of your choice for ROOM to GROW, contact Suzanne McKee or call the Advancement office at 334-683-2347. You may also contribute to the Annual Fund using our convenient online donation form. |
