HVAC $50K Grant

In August, MMI was awarded a $50,000 ADECA grant to improve heating and cooling in Trustees Hall. As a result, 61 new fan coil units will replace an older, two-pipe system on the second and third floors of Trustees. Every room will have brand new unit and individual controls, making it more comfortable for cadets. Once the units are installed (during Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays), Trustees will be the most energy-efficient building on campus.

Females make up 16% of the MMI Corps of Cadets.
Marion Military Institute reported a Fall 2010 enrollment of 452 (including part-time students). Within the Corps, the average ACT and SAT scores for an incoming freshman have increased since last year. The majority of full-time students (74%) reside out-of-state, a testament to our far-reaching Service Academy Prep program. States most heavily represented are Alabama, Florida and Texas. The two most popular tracks remain the Early Commissioning Program and Leadership Education Program (formerly "Basic Cadets").

This year, the Cadet Chain of Command implemented a new recruit cycle, the Intensive Training Cycle, to help freshmen make a better transition to a military junior college. A September 3 Cresting Ceremony officially welcomed recruits into the MMI Corps of Cadets.

Calling for Orange and Black Officers!

David Ivey '88/'90, Vice President for Enrollment Management at MMI, is challenging alumni to help bring prospective cadets to Marion.

We are looking for graduates of MMI who would be interested in becoming an Orange and Black Officer (similar to the Navy's Blue and Gold) to assist MMI in making phone calls to potential cadets in their respective area, represent MMI at college fairs, host regional prospect functions, and so on.

Interested in helping recruit? Contact David Ivey, 334-683-2300.

Spreading MMI's Mission Nationwide
Samuel Mockbee
Visit with Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions

From East Coast to West Coast, MMI President Col. David Mollahan and VP for Institutional Advancement Mrs. Suzanne McKee have been reinforcing our college's mission to key constituents. Recent travels have included stops in Washington, D.C., Charlotte, San Diego, and just up the road in Tuscaloosa. Congressmen and alumni alike are interested in our whole-person approach to education and our unique role in the Alabama Community College System. We will continue to keep MMI on the radar for nationwide contacts who support tomorrow's leaders! Click here to see who Mollahan and McKee have met with lately.

Donated RV FOR SALE!
In August, Mr. Jack McCutchen, of Birmingham, Ala., donated a 1999 Endeavor Diesel RV to the MMI Foundation. He is a friend of Mr. Joel Hillhouse (Secretary of the MMI Board of Trustees and Advisors); the two worked together at Thompson Tractor for many years. When Jack spoke of wanting to sell his RV, Joel suggested he donate it to the MMI Foundation, which will in turn sell the RV.

A full-size luxury RV, the Holiday Rambler Endeavor RV is a virtual paradise on the road. The vehicle is in excellent condition, with only 26,000 miles on it. Average retail price according to NADA guidelines is $71,042 as of July 2010. Asking price is $49,800.

All proceeds will be given to the MMI Foundation for the Room to Grow campaign, an ongoing effort to renovate and improve dormitories for the Corps of Cadets.

Contracting America's Future Leaders

fall contractingContract...agreement...bond.... there are many ways to say it, but when an 18 to 20 year old raises his or her right hand and states, "I, John or Jane Doe, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God," they have chosen to be committed to becoming the best leader to lead Soldiers into war, to take care of others needs ahead of their own, to put away childish things and move toward a loftier responsibility.

It is a selfless act to contract into the ROTC program. Dedication to team or individual achievement and discipline to train above the standard are par for the course of an Early Commissioning Cadet. The percentage of young people today serving their country is less than 1%. Those seeking to lead those few are gallant, and we are fortunate to have them at MMI.

Wrestlers Prepare for Another Banner Year

After achieving much success last year, the MMI wrestling team is excited about the start of the 2010-2011 official season. Competing in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) Marion is one of only a handful of two-year colleges and last year made history as the only two-year college to claim the NCWA National Duals Championship. Co-Head Coach Jim Hazewinkel and the team know that there will be several teams trying to take that trophy away from the Tigers this year. "We are looking forward to a new year of wrestling. We believe we have some excellent potential, and now we just have to develop it through hard work. Our goal is to make every effort to defend our National Duals Title, and that will not be easy. To date the guys have a good attitude and are working hard," says Jim.

Besides MMI, the University of Central Florida, Grand Valley State University, The Apprentice School, and the United States Naval Academy Prep School should be right in the middle of the hunt this year.

Basketball Looking to 'Win the Race'
The theme for the 2010-2011 MMI basketball team is "Win the Race" according to Head Coach Marcus Thomas: "We want to 'Win the Race' in a variety of ways. We have talked to the players that the keys to winning are understanding teamwork, that each player needs to learn a role on the team, accept that role and then work to become excellent playing it. We feel if we can get that message across we can be very successful this year."

The first part of the race for these Tigers is a tough pre-season scrimmage schedule with trips to nationally recognized Chipola Junior College and Tallahassee Community College as well as Columbus State Jamboree and Belhaven College.
