MMI Breaks Enrollment Record

Marion Military Institute reported its highest junior college enrollment to date this year. Official school data counts the full time student body at 465 and overall enrollment at 509 for the Fall 2009 semester. The Office of Institutional Research at MMI estimates the largest previous college enrollment to be 421 college cadets in school year 1965-1966. In comparison to last year, full time enrollment at MMI is up 16%. Diversity within the Corps has also increased with 40% minority students and 22% females. "MMI has a mission to develop leaders of character for the state and nation. That mission combined with the abundance of Army ROTC scholarships played a major role in our overall recruitment success this year," said Sergeant Major Dennis Hastings, Director of Enrollment Management. Focusing on a whole-person education which prepares students for transfer to four-year institutions, MMI has seen steady growth in the past six years. Full-time college enrollment is actually up 169% since 2003-2004. |

Women's Soccer Season Underway
This summer, the MMI football field was converted into a regulation soccer field for the use of MMI's first ever women's soccer team. Before their opening game on Aug. 25, the team donated a bag of soccer balls to be distributed by soldiers to Iraqi children. Brandi Neely of Helena, Ala., made history by scoring the first goal of the season against Judson College. The addition of women's soccer in 2009 brings our number of athletic programs to seven.
Softball Team Defeats D-1 Opponent
The softball program at Marion Military Institute made another first in its early history. On September 13, MMI split a doubleheader with NCAA Division I opponent, Austin Peay State University. In the first game, the APSU Lady Govs defeated MMI 3-0. In the second game, MMI defeated Austin Peay 3-2. It was MMI's first ever win over a Division I opponent.
Athletes Comprise 34% of Cadet Corps
This fall brought a host of student-athletes (156 total) to campus; the group now makes up a third of the student body. This 23% growth compared to last year is a testament to our coaches' recruiting abilities and our competitiveness within the Alabama Community College Conference.

LTC Bauer Donates to Woodfin Scholarship
MMI's History and Social Science Chair Lt. Col. David Woodfin Bauer, USA (Ret) presented a donation to MMI President Col. David Mollahan, USMC (Ret) on August 14 as a contribution to the James Dudley Woodfin Memorial Scholarship Fund. Bauer, an alumnus, has been employed at MMI for 25 years. Bauer's uncle, James Dudley Woodfin, known affectionately as "Jimmy D.," was also an MMI alumnus (class of 1949). Woodfin taught English for many years at MMI and also served as the Institute's Director of Alumni Affairs and Public Relations. In 1995, Bauer established the fund in memory of his uncle in order to assist local students in attending the Institute. For a time, MMI would match pledges from contributing alumni, family and friends toward the scholarship. Bauer called his uncle "an excellent teacher" and laughs when he says his uncle gave him the only "F" he received in college. Tax deductible contributions may be directed to the James Dudley Woodfin Memorial Scholarship Fund through our secure online donation form, which lists all endowed scholarships at MMI.
