MMI Welcomes MAJ Lake '95 as PMS
MAJ Lake

The ROTC Department welcomed alumnus MAJ James Lake, ALARNG, '95 as its new Professor of Military Science in June. Prior to joining MMI, he was an Assistant PMS at the University of Alabama. "The biggest attraction to this PMS position is being able to come back to campus and run the program that gave me my start," he noted.

A Tuscaloosa native, MAJ Lake completed his bachelor's degree at the University of Alabama and earned his MBA from UAB.

As an MMI Cadet, MAJ Lake was a member of the White Knights and Sons of Marion; he graduated as a Distinguished Military Student. His command and leadership assignments have included MP Platoon Leader and MP Company Commander.

While deployed as an MP Battalion S-3 Battle Captain in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his mission included security, detainee operations, running the Iraq Police Academy in Baghdad and training Iraqi police officers on the ground.

His military decorations and awards include the Combat Action Badge, Basic Parachutist Badge, Bronze Star Medal and Meritorious Service Medal.

 HS class of 2009

After educating preparatory school cadets since its founding in 1887, Marion Military Institute graduated its last preparatory school class on May 23, 2009 inside the historic MMI Chapel. The change occurred as a result of joining the Alabama Community College System in 2006, a transition which required the phasing out of the MMI preparatory school.

The senior class was composed of 10 students: Hannah Blalock, Mary Catherine Edwards, Jaynell Hughes, Ben Lee, Erica Thurber, and Marc Turner of Marion; Oluwatoyin Huntar of Lagos, Nigeria; Timothy Jones of Paulina, La.; Erin Lockridge of Pinson; and Tyler Yeager of Franklin, Tenn.

Regional media outlets such as WSFA-Montgomery, the Selma Times Journal (5/9)  and (5/24) and Tuscaloosa News covered the story.
