ROCs Crested in September
MMI held its first parade of the school year on Saturday, Sept. 13 in honor of the traditional Cresting Ceremony, which marks the end of the "Recruit on Campus" (ROC) cycle and the official entry of new students into the MMI Corps of Cadets. By 10:30 a.m., the stands were full of family members in attendance. Grandmothers, siblings and parents had traveled from as far away as Mandeville, La. and as close as Montgomery to celebrate the special event. Colonel Jim Benson, MMI President, addressed the audience and the Corps, remarking on how poised and confident cadets in uniform will appear to their own friends. He also encouraged the cadets to seek rank in order to learn the valuable lessons of leadership. Immediately following the parade, cadets were "crested" by company leadership and proudly wore the MMI crest on their covers for the first time. Pictured: Cadet R.J. Dove Shoot Raises $30K
MMI hosted its 32nd Annual J.C. Webb Memorial Dove Shoot on Thursday, Sept. 25 at the home of Stanley & Gerri Webb. In attendance were more than 150 friends and supporters of MMI. Sales from Shotgun Drawing tickets, auction items and gifts made during the invitational event helped raise more than $30,000 for the MMI Foundation. After spending a day in the fields, hunters enjoyed entertainment by the Kudzu String Band as well as a steak dinner before prizes were drawn. Birmingham guests were the big winners of the night: Cory Troiano walked away with the coveted Weatherby Athena D'Italia III, a 20-gauge shotgun; Julian Smith won the overnight quail hunt at Cottonwoods Sportsman's Lodge, donated by Mary Elizabeth Glass of Gallion; and Bill Satterfield won a two-night condo stay in Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, courtesy of Sheila McKenzie with Kaiser Realty.

Women's Tennis: Rossi Wins Regional Championship MMI freshman tennis star Rachel Rossi lived up to her No. 1 seeding and uprooted all players in her path to win the Women's Junior College Wilson/ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Small College Southeast Regional Championship, hosted by Central Alabama Community College Sept. 26-28. Rossi, a graduate of Venice High School in Venice, Fla., played with an unparalleled amount of grit and determination, as well as a seemingly endless supply of fierce competitiveness, great serves, and unbelievable down-the-line and crosscourt ground strokes.
"I've never seen anyone play at that high of a level for that many matches in a row in a major tournament," said MMI head tennis coach Chuck Wright. "What she did is incredibly astounding and totally incomprehensible. If seeing is believing, I still don't believe what I saw."
What Wright and other tennis aficionados witnessed during this three-day event was a star, a supernova, in the making. Rossi, a tennis tightwad, gave up only five games in five matches. As the singles champion from this regional event, Rossi moves on to play in the 2008 ITA National Small College Championships at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala., on October 16-19.
